PENSACOLA, Fla. — A Florida man was arrested for allegedly beating his friend with a golf club and later a shovel, then attempting to run over the man with his car.
According to an arrest report, 57-year-old Anthony Ray Williams went over to his buddy’s house at about 2 p.m. Nov. 12 and asked to borrow some money. The friend refused, and Williams left mad.
Later that night, an Escambia County Sheriff’s Office deputy was dispatched to a domestic call in the 40 block of Lime Street. The deputy met with a man who had multiple wounds on his head and torso and a large amount of blood on him.
The man told the deputy he saw Williams driving through his neighborhood in a silver Buick sedan. According to the report, Williams spotted the friend in his rearview mirror and then slammed on the accelerator and drove the vehicle directly at him.
The man managed to jump out of the path on the oncoming vehicle, but Williams then exited the vehicle and approached the man with a golf club in his hand. The man told deputies that he grabbed a shovel to defend himself.
Williams is accused of swinging the club and striking the man with it until the end of the golf club came off, and the man fell to the ground. Williams then picked up the shovel and continued to strike his friend, causing multiple injuries, according to the report. Williams then drove off.
Williams was arrested Dec. 2 and charged with aggravated battery with use of a deadly weapon and aggravated assault without intent to kill. He was being held at the Escambia County Jail on Wednesday with a bond of $40,000. According to Escambia County court records, Williams entered a plea of not guilty on Tuesday.
