No ‘Pep-talk’ could have saved Leeds – rampant Man City hold the summit with authority

Seven games winning run and seven goals in the net of Leeds United – Marcelo Bielsa’s team was completely overwhelmed by the performance of the team lead by Argentine’s ‘student’ – Pep Guardiola.Sensational City side had a night of their own. Etihad Stadium saw a 7-0 demolishing of Leeds United – home team thus took revenge on the side who drawed once and even defeated them last season. Two minutes was all it took for Guardiola’s men to register their first attempt on target – Jack Grealish struck from the edge of the area, but Illan Meslier did his job and denied the strike. Moments later, City almost punished Leeds for a sloppy mix-up near their own goal, but Bernardo Silva was not accurate enough.A goal was coming and everyone could sense it. In the 8th minute the Cityzens opened the scoring – Phil Foden picked up the ball from a rebound and from the edge of the box unleashed a shot inside the left post. The second goal immediately followed – the most expensive acquisition Grealish scored a slick header after Riyad Mahrez sent a left-foot cross from the right flank. To close of the first half the stomping home side added a third – Rodri found Kevin De Bruyne and the Belgian knocked the ball past the goalkeeper with a low shot.Agony for the visitors continues shortly after the break. In the 49th minute Mahrez took advantage of a deflection and there was nothing Meslier could have done to save that one. Leeds seemed lost throughout the match and the fact they missed some of their most important players (Bamford, Cooper, Koch, Phillips, Rodrigo, Struijk) added to the misery. At the hour-mark, Man City continued putting more salt to the wound of Leeds. Ruthless De Bruyne made it 5-0 after a wonderful long distance shot. After that – City defenders took the stage – John Stones added a sixth before Nathan Aké headed in the seventh moments later. Table toppers could not have wanted a better night of football for themselves and for their home crowd. At least for tonight, the win for the Cityzens extends their lead at the top of the Premier League table by four points. Their closest followers – Liverpool and Chelsea – play their games on Thursday night. As far as Leeds go, this was Bielsa 160th game in charge of the team and he will try to forget it as soon as possible. And their recent form is not something to hold on – they have now only won once in their last six league matches.Elsewhere, Dean Smith welcomed his former club at Carrow Road. And his old side is now lead by legendary Steven Gerrard – Aston Villa rose over the Canaries with a confident 0-2 win.Jacob Ramsey charged through on goal from midfield in the 34th minute and placed a shot into an impossible angle for Tim Krul after leaving several defenders behind.Villa’s talisman Ollie Watkins closed of the match with a late goal – in the 87th minute he tapped the ball home following an assist from youngster Carney Chukwuemeka. The Birmingham crew move into the top half of the standings. Norwich, on the other hand, remain in the relegation zone after suffering their third straight loss.PREMIER LEAGUE – Round 17TuesdayNorwich – Aston Villa 0- (0-1)/Ramsey 34, Watkins 87/Man.City – Leeds 7-0 (3-0)/Foden 8, Grealish 13, De Bruyne 32, 62, Mahrez 49, Stones 74, Ake 78/Wednesday22.30: (2.15) Crystal Palace (3.40) Southampton (3.70)22.30: (2.25) Burnley (3.35) Watford (3.50)22.30: (2.50) Brighton (3.00) Wolverhampton (3.40)23.00: (2.35) Arsenal (3.40) West Ham (3.25)Thursday22.30: (2.25) Leicester (3.50) Tottenham (3.35)22.45: (1.30) Chelsea (5.80) Everton (12.0)23.00: (1.15) Liverpool (10.0) Newcastle (18.0)***odds are subjecto to change
