After beating Paris Saint-Germain late last season, Lorient nearly did it again. They came so close to beating the French capital team, but Mauro Icardi’s late goal robbed them of a famous win. A fantastic strike from Thomas Monconduit seemed to be the match winner, but Icardi saved a point and possibly Mauricio Pochettino’s job.Any team in the world would miss Kylian Mbappe. But did anyone expect Paris Saint-Germain to struggle this badly without their speedy attacker?Argentine striker Icardi started upfront for the wealthy Parisians and had a great chance to open the scoring inside three minutes of play. But coming close and actually scoring is two utterly different things. A goal at such an early stage would have made the Saints’ job in Lorient much easier, but it wasn’t to be. Their night was destined to be filled with frustration.Just before the half-hour mark, officially the best player in the world Lionel Messi showed a few classy touches and created some space for a shot, but his shot bounced off the post.Lorient were second-bottom going into this match, but you’d never guess that judging by their calmness on the ball. During one of their rare forays into the attacking third of the pitch, their midfielder Thomas Moncondouit slammed a rocket into the roof of Keylor Navas’ net to hand the hosts an improbable lead at the break.Messi created an excellent chance for his compatriot Angel Di Maria, but the winger blasted over the goal when it was easier to hit the back of the net.The visitors were enjoying the lion’s share of possession but went a long time without testing the home team’s goalkeeper Paul Nardi. Even defenders Sergio Ramos and Ashraf Hakimi kept venturing into the enemy territory searching for that elusive goal. However, Ramos’ main “contribution” was a sending off five minutes from time after earning two yellow cards in space of just five minutes. The former Real Madrid captain must be particularly thankful to Icardi for his goal.Although the late goal broke Lorient’s hearts, it’s actually PSG who will feel like losers after dropping two points against one of the league’s weakest teams.LIGUE 1 – ROUND 19WednesdayMonaco – Stade Rennais (1-1)/Ben Yedder 34 pen, Volland 72 – Terrier 16/Bordeaux – Lille OSC 2-3 (2-1)/Elis 18, 45 – Benjamin 33, Yilmaz 77, David 84/Clermont Foot 63 – Strasbourg POSTPONEDLorient – Paris Saint-Germain 1-1 (1-0)/Monconduit 39 – Icardi 90+1/Montpellier – Angers 4-1 (2-1)/Savanier 14, Cozza 30, Ristic 51, Mavididi 76 – Lage 45+1/Nice – RC Lens 2-1 (0-1)/Lemina 63, Kluivert 79 – Kalimuendo 30/Olympique de Marseille – Stade de Reims 1-1 (0-0)/Payet 90+7 pen – Ekitike 75/Olympique Lyonnais – Metz 1-1 (0-0)/Lukeba 56 – Traore 59/Saint-Etienne – FC Nantes 0-1 (0-0)/Muani 83/Troyes – Stade Brestois 29 1-1 (0-1)/Rami 80 – Honorat 5/
