Wounded Foxes are not to mess with – Liverpool suffer defeat with Salah missing a penalty

Liverpool’s 34 game scoring run has ended and Leicester City were the ones to take advantage of a lousy night from Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and the rest of Jurgen Klopp’s attack.Leicester became the first team to beat Liverpool in the Premier League in December in five years as the Foxes secured a 1-0 victory at their den – the King Power Stadium.it was hard for the depleted Foxes but they managed to sniff out three points. On Boxing Day, Manchester City pulled no punches in inflicting a 6-3 beating on Leicester but tonight Brendon Rogers’ crew were on top of their game.No derbies, no problem – three matches, ten goals and tons of excitementCity scored two of their six goals from the spot and giving penalties away is a habit Leicester need to snap out of. Because that could have costed them quite a lot this evening also.Leicester almost signed their death verdict when Wilfred Ndidi felled Salah in the area in the 16th minute. The Egyptian took the ball to take the penalty himself, but his effort was saved by the amazing Kasper Schmeichel who had a hell of a night.Salah kept trying after the penalty deflection from the Danish goalkeeper and had another attempt but his headed rebound cannoned back off the crossbar. The Dane produced another stunning one-handed save to tip over the bar when Salah struck goalwards from point-blank range, ensuring honours were even at half-time.Attempts from the guest kept coming – Mane, Jota, even defenders tried after set plays but it just wasn’t their night. And it surely was the night of Leicester’s defence.Liverpool put more pressure after the break – Mané spurned a massive chance to put the Reds in front when he caught Diogo Jota’s perfectly weighted through-ball, but the Senegalese sent the ball too high and over the bar.So many chances and not one materialized – punishment came. That old footballing proverb – “you have to score whilst on top” was ringing true for Liverpool, as former Everton man Ademola Lookman drove at the heart of the Reds defence before rifling an unstoppable effort past Alisson to send the home crowd into extasy.Even though the visitors continuously pressed and tried, Leicester did not panic. The home team kept their composure and endured. Jota had his attempts but the closest he came to finding an equaliser was after Trent Alexander-Arnold’s corner found him but the Portuguese’s header sent the ball wide of the target.Last week’s Carabao Cup exit to Liverpool saw Leicester disappointed but they could have not served a better revenge. The Foxes secured back-to-back league victories over the Reds for the first time since 1999.This loss is the last thing Klopp & Co needed. Man City are slowly sailing away towards defending their Premier League title (six points ahead) but there is still more games to come and the German manager hopes his squad will get back on their winning track when they face Chelsea on the 2nd of January. Both Chelsea and Liverpool collected 41 points so far.PREMIER LEAGUE – Round 20TuesdayWatford – West Ham 1-4 (1-2)/Dennis 4 – Soucek 27, Benrahma 29, Noble 58 pen, Vlasic 90+2/Southampton – Tottenham 1-1 (1-1)/Ward-Prowse 25 – Kane 41 pen, /Crystal Palace – Norwich 3-0 (3-0)/Edouard 8 pen, Mateta 38, Schlupp 42/Leicester – Liverpool 1-0 (0-0)/Lookman 59/Arsenal – Wolverhampton Wanderers POSTPONEDLeeds – Aston Villa POSTPONEDWednesday22.30: (1.43) Chelsea (4.60) Brighton (9.00)23.15: (15.0) Brentford (7.00) Man.City (1.22)ThursdayEverton – Newcastle POSTPONED23.15: (1.40) Man.Utd.
