Ulinzi thrash Bunyore for second league win

Women’s Cup and Super Cup champions Ulinzi Starlets got back to winning ways in the 2021/22 league with a 6-0 victory over newbies Bunyore Starlets. A brace for skipper Diana Shakava and a goal each for Gentrix Kuyudi, Providence Mukalo, Lanoline Aoko and Sheril Angachi made all the difference for the Joseph Mwanza-coached military side who had been winless in their last two games. “We had a good game, played according to plan and everyone gave their all on the pitch. We were missing many scoring opportunities in the last two matches and something had to give. This win is a good morale booster as we head to the next matches and work our way up the league standings,” said Ulinzi captain Shakava. The match started rather slowly with both teams taking the first minutes to settle and learn the opposition. Susan Malda got the first chance to put Bunyore ahead in the early minutes with a free kick just outside the box. She elected to put a pass through for Shirleen Onjote who failed to connect for what would have been an easy header. In the 12th minute, Shakava connected with Angachi on the right flank the latter sending a cross into the box with was headed out by the opposition for a corner that bore the first goal on the 13th minute, headed home by Kuyudi. FT: Ulinzi Starlets 6-0 Bunyore Starlets Shakava bags a brace deep into stoppage time.#FKFWPL pic.twitter.com/1Qnfh3QyDg— FKF Caretaker – Women (@fkfcc_women) January 8, 2022 Five minutes later, Bunyore came close to bagging an equaliser as Juliana Khasindi send an attempt from about 30 yards out which shotstopper Valentine Khwaka fumbled with, having been caught flat-footed for a corner. Ulinzi’s Emily Egesa would have put her side two goals ahead two minutes later from a freekick, but her efforts went over the bar. Ulinzi were knocking and Bunyore did little to prevent the second goal that came in the 26th minute. Mukalo dribbled her way through the defence and into the box to slot the soldier’s second at the top of the net from the left. Bunyore needed a break from from Ulinzi’s attacks rather than the Nairobi heat, served promptly after the second goal with a water break.Unfortunately, it was the military side who used the break to strategise for a goal that came two minutes into the restart through Aoko. The shotstopper was again at fault as Ulinzi came close to conceding in the 37th minute, allowing a long shot that fell on her hands roll off towards goal with a Bunyore player hot on its heels but Lucy Akoth was at hand to clear the ball for a fruitless corner. The first half ended with Joseph Mwanza’s charges holding the three goal advantage and well on their way to a second victory in four matches. On resumption, Mwanza brought in Everline Juma for Egesa while Arunga brought in Noel Shilachilo and Lilian Airo. The latter’s changes seemed to contain Ulinzi’s attacks, while injecting some urgency to the side’s push for a goal.Malda, twice came close to pulling one back for the visitors with well taken freekicks, both attempts on target but handled well by the Ulinzi keeper. The threats to their throne prompted Mwanza’s charges to change tact.Their efforts paid off in the 75th minute as Shakava, put through by Angachi on the left flank, send her shot looping over the goalkeeper for Ulinzi’s fourth. Angachi was on target, seven minutes later for the team’s fifth. The team skipper, off of a weak attempt at goal scored her second and the team’s sixth as the Bunyore keeper was again caught napping, reacting too late to Shakava ball that seemed to be headed out of play.
