Women Premier League (WPL) title hopefuls Gaspo Women picked a hard-fought 3-2 victory away to Zetech Sparks in a league match played at GEMS Cambridge grounds on Sunday 9 January. Heading to the match, both sides were coming off losses and needed the points to better their chances of fighting for the 12-team league title. Gaspo had fallen to nemesis Thika Queens on Wednesday in a mid-week match while Zetech fell 1-0 to Kayole Starlet on Tuesday, in a match the varsity side had dominated but failed to utilise their chances. Bertha Omitta opened the scoring for the WPL league runners up in the fifth minute to give Gaspo the lead early on. Zetech came close to equalising in the 16th minute as Elizabeth Kisa sent a powerful shot towards goal by Gaspo’s Vivian Akinyi was in place to save the day for the visitors. Midfielder Corazone Aquino stepped up to take the penalty, making no mistake in performing her duty to put Gaspo two goals ahead. The match headed to the breather with the Domitila Wangui-coached side holding the advantage. One minute into resumption, Lavender Atieno wasted no time in getting Zetech back into the match with a 46th minute goal that revived hopes for a better result for the varsity side. The Bernard Kitolo-coached varsity side kept knocking and soon enough, their efforts paid as Joy Okeyo scored in the 71st minute to put Zetech level and rattle Gaspo who had to snap into action in search of a winning goal. In the 84th minute, second half substitute Mercy Airo capitalised on a defensive error by Kitolo’s charges to slot home Gaspo’s third and winning goal as the Kiambu-based outfit bagged maximum points. The three-time champions led 3-0 in the 60th minute with goals from Terry Engesha and a brace from Lorna Nyabuto. However, 18 minutes later, the visitors had reduced the deficit to just one goal with the score reading 3-2. Each side scored a goal each in the preceeding minutes for the final score.In other weekend matches, Kangemi Ladies woes continue as they fell 1-4 to Kayole Starlet. A brace by Ann Wairimu and a goal goal piece from Sharon Nduta and Josephine Nana gave the latter their second win of the season.
