Luka Modric asks Real Madrid for the impossible – and could move to Manchester City

Real Madrid have an unwritten rule of only offering one-year contracts to their over-30 players. After signing a couple of those, players tend to get restless. Sergio Ramos never got the two-year contract he demanded and so he left to Paris to get what he wanted. The latest player who seems to be entangled in a similar problem is Luka Modric. The veteran Croatian midfielder maestro’s contract has less than six months left on it but the player is thus far unimpressed by the club’s offer of another 12-month deal. Instead, Modric is demanding two more years – something he’s well aware is virtually impossible to get.Sunday, 16.00: (4.50) Elche (3.70) Villareal (1.87)🔥 @lukamodric10 with the sauce!#Supercopa pic.twitter.com/sJ7VDsMfM5— Real Madrid C.F. 🇬🇧🇺🇸 (@realmadriden) January 12, 2022 Due to this impasse in negotiations, Catalan newspaper El Nacional reports that Modric expects the club to return the favour he’d made when he agreed to lower his salary demands in the middle of the Covid crisis. Even now, he’s happy to have his wages reduced – but is insisting on a 2-year contract with Los Blancos. While the talks are ongoing, there is space for a third party to hijack the deal – just like PSG’s done a year ago with Ramos. This time, it’s Manchester City who wouldn’t mind having such a classy player return to the Premier League where he’d made a name for himself in a Tottenham Hotspur shirt. The idea is to have Modric for a year at Etihad Stadium and another year at City’s sister club – New York City. This kind of arrangement would be beneficial for Modric’s family, as his salary would be considerably higher than that Real Madrid would offer.Real and Barca clash in the Saudi desert in farcical Spanish Super Cup showdownIt’s nice to have that sort of option, but Modric’s first choice is still to remain at Estadio Santiago Bernabeu. He’s waiting for a call from president Florentino Perez. The call may never come or could end with an unsatisfactory offer for the 2018 World Cup silver medalist. The sky blues of Manchester are waiting in wings.
