Top-four place is great but it’s not the Hammers’ final destination

Jarrod Bowen scored twice as West Ham returned to the top four of the Premier League with a 2-0 win at home to basement club Norwich on Wednesday. Bowen’s double, which took him to eight goals for the season, saw the Hammers go two points clear of London rivals Arsenal as David Moyes’s men posted their third straight league win.The Hammers boss Moyes said that there is more to come from the East London team.”We have to try and keep it going. As long as we are around the mix and European places, that will be really good but if we can hang on the coat tails of teams above – that is what we will try and do.”In a match re-arranged from December because of a Covid-19 outbreak in the Canaries’ camp, Bowen almost put West Ham ahead inside two minutes at the London Stadium found by Manuel Lanzini’s ball into the box, but his shot was too near goalkeeper Tim Krul. Lanzini went close moments later and Krul was fortunate to avoid conceding a penalty when he clashed with Nikola Vlasic on the goal-line, shoving the forward to the turf by his face.Jarrod Bowen has been in fine form for West Ham this season:👕 30 appearances⚽️ 8 goals🅰️ 10 assists pic.twitter.com/Fm1wd6WJ0Y— Footy Accumulators (@FootyAccums) January 12, 2022 West Ham had the ball in the net in the 35th minute when Bowen’s cross went straight in but that effort was disallowed given Vlasic was offside. Their dominance, however, was rewarded three minutes before the break when Bowen got ahead of Ben Gibson to head in a cross from Vladimir Coufal.West Ham were value for their victory, but it was not earned without some moments of alarm, particularly when Lukasz Fabianski tipped Adam Idah’s rasping shot onto the post midway through the second half with the Irons holding a one-goal lead. But the author of the double has no doubt who earned the points.”I think it was a good performance. We know that Norwich are a good team and they’re fighting for points and they were at it and we had to put the barricades up at times. But under this manager we’ve really thrived by hitting teams on the break and got our way into games and I think with the attacking threat we’ve got, we’ve always got a goal in us. When it was 1-0 it’s always a bit nerve-wracking, so then to get the two-goal lead was nice.”West Ham complete a busy week with a third home game on Sunday, when Leeds United are the visitors to London Stadium for the second time in eight days.A repeat of last weekend’s 2-0 Emirates FA Cup third-round win over the Whites would see the Hammers sustain their place in the top four, regardless of how their rivals fare.
