AFC Leopards edge Mathare to claim first back to back win of the season

AFC Leopards claimed their first back to back win of the season after seeing off Mathare United 2-1 in a Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKFPL) in a clash staged at the Nyayo National Stadium.Mathare United interim coach Francis Xavier lauded the boys effort in the game despite their eighth consecutive loss of the season but admitted there work is to be done in the coming days.”We tried our best, the boys gave their best, we played better than the last game but the results are not satisfying we will have to go back and rectify where we went wrong in this game,” said Xavier.AFC Leopards head coach Patrick Aussems was delighted to claim six points against Mathare United but was dejected to concede first in both encounters.”We were expecting six points against and it’s never easy to face the same opponent in three days, the most important is take three points. Last game we conceded first and also today so we were in reaction and not action,” said Aussems. The two teams had met on Thursday with AFC Leopards having to do it the hard way, coming from a goal down to beat Mathare United 3-1 and putting some distance between them and the relegation zone. The Slum Boys on the other hand were suffering one of their worst seasons with head coach Ezekiel Akwana walking out of the club citing financial woes that affected the team’s performances, having gone on a seven game losing streak and 11 games without a win.Ingwe have been decimated by injuriyand suspensions which lead to head coach Patrick Aussems naming only six substitutes on the bench with Marvin Nabwire and Collins Shivachi out through suspension.Ingwe were also without Dan Sunguti who is set to be out for nine months after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), Jaffari Odeny who continues to recuperate from a post anterior cruciate ligament(ACL) reconstructive surgery.Mathare United cast their woes aside, imbued by their interim coach Francis Xavier who was in the books of AFC Leopards as a player for over a decade as they needed only eight minutes to break the deadlock through Eugene Wethuli. The move started from Martin Ndeirtu who played a pass wide to to Daniel Okoth who took a touch and fed Wethuli who was making a run inside the box and slotted the ball past Levin Opiyo.Ingwe almost responded immediately through Fasanami Ojo who brilliantly shielded Martin Ongori to receive a throwing as he turned and let loose of ferocious shot that drew a smart save from Byrne Omondi. After a barren spell with limited chances, AFC Leopards went into the half time break level when Dan Wanyama threaded in a neat through ball to Eugene Mukangula who knew he lacked the pace to beat Victor Odhiambo but used his body to his advantage and shield him off and nonchalantly slotted the ball past the onrushing Byrne.Mathare had a mirror start to the second half as they almost regained their lead in the 55th minute when Wethuli floated in a cross that was headed towards goal but an outstretched arm from Opiyo kept the scores level.Just like their reverse encounter on Thursday, AFC Leopards completed the comeback at the stroke of the hour mark when Peter Thiong’o played in Fasanami Ojo whose first time finish ripples the back of the net and wheeled away to embrace Lawrence Webo. There was little goal mouth action till the full time whistle as Mathare United conceded defeat early as they went down without a fight with Ingwe claiming the three points.AFC Leopards XI: Levis Opiyo, Peter Thiong’o, Washington Munene, Kaycie Odhiambo, Robert Mudenyu, Dan Musamali (Owen Mboya 81′), Brian Wanyama, Giovanni Lukhumwa, Maxwell Otieno, Fasanami Ojo (Bonface Mukhekhe 90′), Eugene Mukangula.Unused subs: Maxwell Muchesia, Zachary Njite, Eric Mbithi, Joachim Oluoch.Mathare XI: Byrne Omondi (GK), Kennedy Ochieng, Victor Odhiambo, Jackson Juma, Norman Ogolla, Martin Ongori (Alphonse Ndonye 20′ (Said Musa 83′)), Meshack Muyonga, Danson Kago (C) (Tony Odhiambo 82′), Daniel Otieno (Douglas Kibet 64′), Martin Nderitu, Eugene WethuliUnused subs: Tom Kangeta (GK), Brian Chege.
