Former Premier League manager and Republic of Ireland international Chris Hughton is set to be appointed new head coach of the Ghana national team. The news broke just two days after the Ghanaian FA sacked Milovan Rajevac following the Black Stars’ disastrous AFCON campaign. The 63-year-old former left-back, who spent most of his playing career at Tottenham Hotspur, has been without a job since being shown the door at EFL Championship team Nottingham Forest last September. After coaching for Spurs, Newcastle United, Norwich City and Brighton, Hughton will take his first job as head coach of a national team. He’s had a two-year stint as the assistant manager for the Republic of Ireland, the country he represented as a player in the 1994 World Cup. However, it now seems that an interim manager would be appointed to oversee the double-header. According to Ghanaian journalist Muftawu Nabila Abdulai, Borussia Dortmund assistant coach Otto Addo is the most likely to be given the temporary role, with Hughton waiting in wings.@ghanafaofficial position on an interim coach has not changed. It’s still Otto and Tanko for Ghana v Nigeria double-header. Sources tell me Hughton is in Ghana for some small ‘holidays’.FA were willing to fight the option of government (PM) is they are not convinced. pic.twitter.com/D4X5E8djj5— Muftawu Nabila Abdulai (@Muftawu_Nabila) January 28, 2022 With a place at this year’s World Cup at stake, there will be no time for a transitional period. It’s all about motivating the players so they could show their quality against another team who’d made an early exit from the AFCON. Besides Addo, Aston Villa youth coach George Boateng and former Black Stars assistant coach Ibrahim Tanko have been linked to the vacant coaching role. However, it now looks like the son of a Ghanaian postman will make an important delivery in Accra.
