Luke List beats Will Zalatoris in a playoff at Farmers Insurance Open for first PGA Tour win

The Farmers Insurance Open went to a playoff Saturday between two golfers chasing their first PGA Tour wins.

Luke List, 37, posted a final-round 66 to get to 15 under and then waited one hour, 45 minutes to see how the rest of the day would unfold.

Will Zalatoris, 25, had a chance to win but missed a birdie putt on the 18th hole. He finished regulation with 12 straight pars to shoot a 71.

That sent both golfers, who were once paired together in the Korn Ferry Tour event, back to the 18th hole to start the playoff. The two hit their tee shots into a bunker, their golf balls coming to rest about six inches apart.

After they both blasted out, List hit first from the fairway and nailed a beautiful approach, his balling rolling about a foot away from the cup. Zalatoris hit a nice approach as well, his ball stopping in about the same spot that he did in regulation. List tapped in for birdie, leaving Zalatoris the opportunity to tie but he missed it left.

List finally grabs his first win and he punches his ticket to the Masters in April. He has won more than $10 million on the PGA Tour over his 15-year pro career. He won twice, nine years apart, on the Korn Ferry Tour. He was close four years ago on the PGA Tour but lost in a playoff to Justin Thomas in the Honda Classic. But on a rare Saturday finish, List finally got the job done.

It was just eight days ago that Zalatoris, last season’s PGA Tour’s Rookie of the Year, set the course record at PGA West’s Nicklaus Tournament Course in the second round of the American Express with a 61. His first PGA Tour win is going to have to wait, however.

Jason Day came up short of his first win in more than four years but he did electrify the crowd with an eagle.

Jon Rahm, who won the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines last summer, had a birdie putt on the 18th hole to join the playoff but missed. He finished in a tie for third after shooting a 71.
