Harambee Starlets persist with training despite doomed AWCON qualifier fixture

The national women’s football team, Harambee Starlets, are still continuing with their preparations for the upcoming Africa Women Cup of Nations (AWCON) 2022 qualification match against Uganda amidst uncertainty of whether the game will go on as initially planned.Over the past week, Confederation of African Football (CAF) appeared to have ended Kenya’s hope of playing at this year’s AWCON being held in Morocco after releasing a statement announcing Uganda’s qualification following Harambee Starlets’ reported withdrawal from the qualifiers through communication that had allegedly been done by ousted Football Kenya Federation CEO Barry Otieno.CAF deals Kenya hammer blow with confirmation of Uganda’s qualification for AWCONDespite the announcement being confirmed by the African football governing body and Uganda rejoicing in getting automatic qualification to the continental tournament, newly appointed head coach Alex Alumirah has remained adamant that the morale in camp is high as the team continues with their preparation in camp following assurances from the FKF Caretaker Committee that the match will go on as planned.“The matter at hand is something I cannot speak of but to the best of my knowledge, we are preparing the girls to be ready for the fixture that is set for 17th February. From where I sit and with the communication I have, what I have been told to do by the Caretaker Committee technical team is to continue to prepare the girls and that we will play with Uganda come the 17th,” the national team coach said.Harambee Starlets is currently in camp at Kasarani and will continue to be in camp as they prepare for the qualifier against Uganda as scheduled .We would like to assure Kenyans, Ugandans and CAF that all measures will be put in place to ensure that the match goes on as planned pic.twitter.com/wT69NAdds5— FKFcaretaker (@FKFcaretaker) January 30, 2022 Kenya was slated to play the Crested Cranes in two-legged qualification matches scheduled for 17th and 23rd February 2022 with the winner progressing to the tournament that will be staged in Morocco in August.Full Provisional squadGoalkeepersAnnette Kundu(AEL-Cyprus), Pauline Kathuru (GASPO), Lilian Awour (Soyaux- France), Samantha Akinyi(Tigers Fc – Tanzania), Carolyne Rufa (Fountain Gate – Tanzania)DefendersLeah Andiema (GASPO), Vivian Nasaka (Vihiga Queens), Juliet Andibo (Thika Queens), Dorcas Shikobe (Lakatama FC- Cyprus), Lucy Akoth (Ulinzi), Phoebe Owiti (Vihiga Queens), Enez Mango (Vihiga Queens), Wincate Kaari (Thika Queens), Ruth Ingotsi (Lakatamia- Cyprus), Janet Bundi (Vihiga Queens), Janet Mumo (Mathare United), Anita Adongo (Alliance – Tanzania), Lavender (Zetech), Nelly Sawe (Thika Queens)The Harambee Starlets were already in camp preparing for the double-legged encounter with their Ugandan counterparts https://t.co/EOEF1olkSP— Mozzart Sport Kenya (@MozzartSportKe) January 28, 2022 MidfieldersSheril Angachi (Ulinzi Starlets), Corazone Aquino (Gaspo Women), Mercy Oginga (Vihiga Queens), Lydia Akoth (Thika Queens), Nuru Adima (Thika Queens), Cynthia Shilwatso(Logrono-Spain), Lorna Nyarinda (Vihiga Queens), Martha Amunyolette (Trans Nzoia Queens), Marjolene Nekesa (USA), Diana Koske (Tigers – Tanzania), Cindy Ngaira (Wadadia)AttackersTerry Engesha (Vihiga Queens), Jentrix Shikangwa (Fatih Karagumruk- Turkey ) Mwanalima Adam Dogo (Hakkaragicu-Turkey), Violet Wanyonyi (Trans Nzoia), Essie Akida (PAOK-Greece) Mercy Airo (GASPO), Elizabeth Wambui (Gaspo).
