The winner of this year’s AFCON Sadio Mane was not ready and was ’still in bed’ according to coach Jurgen Klopp, while his teammate Mohamed Salah started the match from the bench and came in for the last 30 minutes of the games against Leicester, but all that was still enough for the Reds, as they defeated the Foxes: Liverpool – Leicester 2-0. Sadio Mane will be eager to get back to the squad as soon as possible, as Liverpool’s new signing Luis Diaz filled in perfectly in his first start for the Reds. The Colombian showed his strength and speed, and caused panic among Leicester’s back four moving around to both flanks, assisting and creating chances for himeself. But in the end, it was the ever present Diogo Jota who scored the only goals of the game, and upped his total to 12 this season. 17 – Diogo Jota has now scored 17 goals across all competitions for Liverpool this season; already his most in a single campaign while playing for a Premier League club. They managed to find space in Liverpool’s half when they got the ball, with James Maddison as the main player, but he missed one good chance and then Liverpool shut him away and applied the pressure on Leicester’s back four. New boy Diaz was too quick and strong for Justin, who had trouble containing him, and Schmeichel had a busy night, with couple of good saves. As the first half went on, Liverpool was closer to their opponents goal and Foxes had trouble getting the ball out of their half. And after a corner from Alexander-Arnold, Van Dijk’s header was saved brilliantly by Schmeichel, but the rebound fell right into the lap of the concentrated Jota and he scored with ease: 1-0 in the 34th minute. Leicester have failed to keep a clean sheet in each of their last 17 Premier League away games. That equals their worst run in the competition which ended in October 2001.📻 Listen on @BBCSounds and @5liveSport#BBCFootball #LIVLEI— Match of the Day (@BBCMOTD) February 10, 2022 Liverpool continued to press in the second half, and Leicester captain had to save a couple of chances, while the guests couldn’t do anything up front. Meddison and Patson Daka were well covered and they didn’t make any threats to Allison, who was bored most of the match, unlike his counterpart on the other side of the pitch. Salah came in the 60th minute, and Liverpool became more dangerous, with both the Egyptian and the Colombian coming one from the wings to create chances and shots from the hosts. Twice Salah had the chance and twice Schmeichel did well to deny him. The Dane saved another chance from Diaz while Salah’s third shot ended off the post. The last 15 minutes smelled like the second goal, and finally Jota scored his second goal of the match.
