Kenyan international Joash Onyango featured for 90 minutes as his Tanzanian club Simba SC began their CAF Confederation Cup group stage campaign with a triumphant 3-1 win over Ivory Coast’s ASEC Mimosa on Sunday afternoon on Dar.The hosts went ahead in the 12th minute through Senegalese forward Papa Ousmane Sakho who scored with a beautiful overhead finish after connecting to a cross from the left flank. Simba took a 1-0 lead to the break.Mimosas showed some improvement after the interval and started to attack more in search of the much-needed leveler. A loose ball from Onyango was collected by Stephane Aziz who fired home past a helpless Manula for a deserved equalizer.The parity would however last for 19 minutes before Simba got a second. ASEC keeper fouled substitute Yusufu Muhilu and a penalty was awarded from which veteran defender Shomari Kapombe fired Simba ahead. Before ASEC would absorb what had just hit them, Simba got a third two minutes later through Peter Banda whose low finish beat the visitors’ keeper.Simba had more chances to score and were denied a fourth by a goal-line clearance in stoppage time. Next for Simba is an away game against Nigeria’s Union Sportive de la Gendarmerie Nationale on 20th February.
