Drogba: ‘I hope Lukaku learned from me’

Tough in 2011, tough in 2021. Ten years have passed since Romelu Lukaku played for Chelsea the first time and it doesn’t get better the second time around either. In fact, coming back to Stamford Bridge was not so good as everyone expected. When the big transfer was made before the start of the 2021/22 season, everybody had high expectations, especially the Belgian striker. Coming off this best season ever, he came as a Serie A champion looking to finish off what he unsuccessfully started in 2021 in Chelsea, but so far, it was not good.If there was any doubt, now there shouldn’t be – Chelsea officially join crème-de-la-crème of world footballLukaku is not enjoying his second spell with the Blues and so far scored only 10 goals in all competitions. Two of those came at the FIFA Club World Cup, one in the semis and the second in the finals, which Chelsea won in overtime against Palmeiras. And his childhood idol and mentor Didier Drogba backed Lukaku to finally put difficult time behind him.“I hope he learned from me. He’s a goalscorer. He’s having a difficult moment, but bouncing back and this kind of trophy will bring his confidence back. When we have the time to speak I give him some advice, but after that it’s his career, it’s his responsibilities now. It’s him now. He’s in charge of the attacking players, so he has to find the ideas and make it his own story” said the Ivorian.🗣 | Didier #Drogba on #Lukaku after #Chelsea’s Club World Cup triumph… 👀Turning point for Big Rom?🤞 pic.twitter.com/lfL6kh67he— ChelseaFC365 ™ (@CFC365Official) February 13, 2022 Former Chelsea great was commenting on Lukaku’s performance in the tournament and was happy to see the Belgian do well.“He took his responsibility to talk and put a bit more pressure on himself and delivered, scoring an important goal. Every player always has something to prove and will always want to do better but he scored the goal to give us the lead and I’m happy with this performance” the former Chelsea striker said after watching his old club lift the trophy.(2.00) WBA (3.45) BLACKBURN (4.20)The Ivorian knows all about Lukaku’s issues, as the Belgian really wanted to do good for Chelsea, after he left the club with ‘unfinished business’ in 2014, but so far failed to do so. Still, Drogba believes in his former teammate.“He put himself under a certain pressure because coming back to the club where you start was difficult, and you come back because you want to prove a point. But he’s winning and I think he’s going to make it” Drogba said.
