Zesco United head coach Mumamba Numba has explained why they offered Vincent Oburu a short-term contract when he moved to the club in January from the FKF Premier League.Oburu left Wazito FC for Zesco United where he replaced compatriot Jesse Were who left the club after five years for another ZSL side, Kansanshi Dynamos. Unlike Were, however, Oburu was offered a deal until June 2022 an indication that the club was not too sure about him replacing their all-time top scorer. On Saturday the left-footed forward made his debut in the 2-1 win against Nkana in Ndola, leaving a mark in the game as he scored the opening goal after just 21 minutes before setting up John Ching’adu for the winner after Nkana had leveled from a controversially awarded spot-kick.He was subsequently named man of the match in the game and walked home with a token courtesy of the league sponsors in Zambia and the Kenyan would not have wished for a better debut in his first tie playing club football outside his country of birth.🚨JUST IN🚨Vincent Oburu on the scoresheet for Zesco United with a goal and an assist as Zesco beat Nkana Rangers 2-1.#FFP #StarsAbroad🇰🇪 pic.twitter.com/3M5JyHtond— Friends of Football (@friendsofutball) February 19, 2022 In his post-match interview, Numba explained why they opted to tie down Oburu on a short-term deal. He says they needed more time to assess him before committing to handing him a long-term deal as he is young and needs closer observation.“He is a young player and that is why we thought of giving him a short contract for six months so that we assess him thoroughly before we can make the right decision which is to give him a long-term contract,” the tactician said.Oburu has previously turned out for AFC Leopards as well in the FKF Premier League. He is a full Kenyan international and was part of the Harambee Stars team that lifted the 2017 Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup in Kenya.
