Gor Mahia head coach Andreas Spier believes having utility players in the team will help avert a possible crisis in the team in case any of his central defenders is injured or gets suspended in the course of the season. The departure of Harun Shakava to Kenya Police and Frank Odhiambo’s move to Sweden left Gor, who are already serving a transfer ban short at the back, specifically in the central defence department. The only available center-backs in the team are youngster Joshua Mahero and Dennis Ng’ang’a who appears to have fully transitioned from the left-back position to become a central defender. Many argue that lack of depth in that department could expose Gor as the season progresses but their coach is not a worried man. He believes that the utility players available in the team will help avert a possible crisis.Harun Shakava will today Join Kenya Police FC after the expiry of his contract with Gor Mahia. This means that youngster Joshua Mahero is the only natural central defender in the team. We have players who can play in one position than one, and it is a situation that I believe that we can manage, for now, we can cover these positions, “he told Mozzart Sport. The club will be able to recruit from January 2023 and they are already planning ahead by identifying players they can sign. Among those who could be signed is one from their youth and other young, promising defenders from other FKF Premier League teams.”We are looking for a central defender in our youth team and also promising central defenders from other clubs,” Spier added.Gor Mahia will play Bandari on Saturday.
