Tight at the top, tight at the bottom: Liverpool hammer Leeds to put pressure on the Citizens

The race for the title is heating up! Liverpool beat Leeds United easily on Wednesday night to close the gap on Manchester City to just three points.Leeds had to pick themselves up after the painful home defeat to rivals Manchester United. A trip to Anfield would be a damning task for just about any team in the world these days, let alone for out-of-form Whites. Two goals from the spot and an unlikely Joel Matip strike ended the contest after only half an hour of play.Trent Alexander-Arnold returned to the team and looked lively as Reds totally outclassed their visitors.Apart from two rightly-awarded penalties that were converted with ease by Salah, Matip delivered another piece of brilliance that’s utterly untypical of his playing position. He ventured into Leeds’ territory, played a pass out to the right to Salah. The Cameroon international continued his forward run and lashed the Egyptian’s return pass past Illan Meslier.Sadio Mane added the fourth ten minutes from time and he made it five ten minutes later with the visitors going through the motions. But it wasn’t the end. Virgil van Dijk scored a header deep in injury time to complete the humiliation for the Yorkshire team. Leeds’ defence continues to leak goals at an alarming rate, making it 16 goals conceded in their last four games. Marcelo Bielsa should be very worried indeed. It was a big night for relegation-threatened teams – Watford and Burnley. And after tonight’s disintegration at Anfield, Leeds are right in the struggle.Burnley were encouraged by their excellent 3-0 win at Brighton a few days earlier, but Antonio Conte’s Spurs proved a little tougher than the Seagulls on their visit to Turf Moor. For a long time, the Cockerels were holding the ball and knocking on the door in awful weather conditions, but Sean Dyche’s team just managed to keep Harry Kane and Son at bay. They kept waiting for their chance to land a blow to their wasteful opponents and they got it 20 minutes from time. Captain Ben Mee bundled the ball past Hugo Lloris from a Josh Brownhill free-kick to send home fans to ecstasy.

Conte, who led his side to a fine win over champions Manchester City was back at square one. He buried his head in hands, knowing that a comeback would be difficult. Indeed, Burnley managed to hold on to secure back-to-back wins and creep up to Newcastle United. The relegation dogfight will surely go down to the wire.Crystal Palace made the short trip to Vicarage Road and scored a comfortable 4-1 win over Watford. Jean-Philippe Mateta scored a nice opener with a turn and shot and Conor Gallagher finished off a team move to restore the Eagles’ lead after Moussa Sissoko had given Watford a brief glimmer of hope with his headed equalizer.Wilfried Zaha added two late goals in the dying minutes to ensure the win over Roy Hodgson. The veteran English coach couldn’t inspire the Hornets to a win over his previous club. Watford are looking dead and buried already.PREMIER LEAGUERearranged gamesWednesdayBurnley – Tottenham 1-0 (0-0)/Mee 71/Watford – Crystal Palace 1-4 (1-2)/Sissoko 18 – Mateta 15, Gallagher 43, Zaha 85, 90/Liverpool – Leeds 6-0 (3-0)/Salah 15 pen, 35 pen, Matip 31, Mane 80, 90, Van Dijk 90+3/Thursday22.45: (1.70) Arsenal (3.60) Wolverhampton (6.00)***odds are subject to change
