Michael Olunga’s Al Duhail lose Qatar League title again

For a second season running in Qatar, Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga will have to do without a league title to his name despite his concerted efforts particularly in the 2021/2022 season in the Qatar Stars League (QSL).This is after opponents Al Sadd, home to Ghanain international Andre Ayew and former Arsenal midfielder Santi Cazorla, successfully defended their title with two games to spare. After twenty matches played, Olunga’s Al Duhail trailed by nine points which made it mathematically impossible for them to close the gap with only a maximum of six points remaining from the two games.📸 Al-Sadd were crowned champions of the QNB Stars League for the 16th time, marking the club’s 77th overall titlehttps://t.co/dqisuarwcs#AlSadd #QNBstarsLeaguepic.twitter.com/mcfiwK2HtA— 🏆 #77 Al Sadd SC | نادي السد (@AlsaddSC) February 25, 2022 Having joined the Qatari outfit in January 2021, midway through last season’s 2020/2021 campaign, Olunga has now not had any league success in the country since his arrival from Japan with the last time Al Duhail won the title coming in the 2019/2022 season.Despite Olunga’s red hot streak in the penalty box where he has been banging goals for fun this season, Al Sadd have still managed to edge the challenge from their closest opponents. Two French clubs salivating for Michael OlungaThe former Gor Mahia man will however be hoping to atone for the league miss with the league’s Golden Boot as he is firmly in the driving seat to clinch his first top scorer award since his move.Currently, the 2015 Kenya Premier League Most Valuable Player (MVP) tops the scoring charts on 23 goals with the closest challenger Ayew eight goals away in second place. When Al Duhail take on Umm-Salal today in the penultimate fixture of the season, Olunga will once again be hoping to extend his rich vein of form.
