Mara Sugar boss discuses the team’s struggles

Mara Sugar head coach Steve Biko says they are working to boost the confidence of the players in order to curb their woeful run in the National Super League this season. The newbies have lost their last four matches in the league, a run that has seen them drop to the relegation zone in the second tier. Many had anticipated that they would take the NSL by storm after their promotion but that has not been the case so far.Asked what is ailing his team, the former AgroChemicals tactician explained that the team’s confidence has been shattered after back to back losses. They are however working to lift the spirits of the players in order to return to winning ways.“We have to keep building and improving the confidence of the players which I think is our main challenge right now. As you know we have a young squad and when you lose too many games it tends to dent their confidence and it is something that we are working on right now, we have seen positive response in the last two games and I am positive that we will be back on track soon,” he told Mozzart Sport.National Super League, NSL Results:FT: MC FC 3-2 Mara Sugar.FT: Naivas FC 3-0 Zoo Kericho.Photo Courtesy. pic.twitter.com/Pc2rooiK0G— Stephen Mukangai (@SMukangai) January 27, 2022 He further added that they have noted positives in the last two games despite both ending in defeats. He says they were letting in early goals in their previous games and it is something that they have worked on in training.“We noticed that we were letting in goals too early in the game and recovering from it has been a major issue and in our last game for example we conceded in the final ten minutes which for me is progress but we have to ensure that we are focused throughout the game,” he added. The team has been without striker Ruben Mwita and goalkeeper Fredrick Munyendo in the last few weeks and their absence, Biko believes had played a part in the torrid run.“Mwita is our top scorer and he is out with an injury and definitely that is a blow because he was a frequent scorer for us, Fredrick is also out and being our first choice keeper it is definitely a blow but we hope to have them back soon which will be a positive thing for the team, “he concluded.Next for Mara is a home match against Gusii FC on Wednesday afternoon in Awendo.
