How Jairo’s versatility came in handy in Talanta’s win over Sofapaka

FC Talanta head coach Ken Kenyatta was forced to turn to his winger Michael Jairo to man the left back when they faced the 2009 league champions Sofapaka on Wednesday at the Kasarani Annex.Kenyatta had to field the attacker in the defence as his first choice Thomas Wainaina had been ruled out having seen red against Ulinzi Stars for a second bookable offence while Eric Lusala is away on compassionate leave.Despite coming up against the fleet-footed Sofapaka wingers who prior to kick off were thought to have a field day by exploiting on his weakness, Jairo punched above his weight with his contribution helping the team humble their opponents 2-1.2.50 Everton 3.15 Newcastle 3.20The birthday boy revealed that the technical bench had prepared him for the weighty task throughout the week and the support from teammates saw him comfortably contain Ambrose Sifuna in the first half and Hansel Ochieng in the final stanza.Breaking NewsSofapaka FC coach Ken Odhiambo has declined post match interview with Sports journalists at the Kasarani Annex because they have been beaten 2-1 by Talanta FC.— Chris Migwambo (@CMigwambo) March 16, 2022 “The coach took time to prepare me from the time he knew he would be without natural left backs. I had been training with the defenders in the sessions we have had since our last game against Ulinzi. I talked to a number of full backs and tapped some advice on how to contain wingers and thus, I wasn’t exposed by the Sofapaka forwards,” he said.Although he ruled out transitioning into a defender, the Kariobangi Youth graduate believes that the lessons he picked from the game will go a long way in helping the club keep more cleansheets going forward. Talanta who are in their maiden season in the top flight have not had a good defensive record as they have conceded more than they have scored.
