With only eleven games to go, Mathare United’s newly appointed head coach John Kamau is hopeful that his team can use the upcoming two week international break to turn around the rough tides that have seen the slum boys languish at the bottom of the log table with the threat of relegation largely looming over the club.Since the coach’s appointment at the start of February, Kamau has only been able to mastermind one victory in the seven games that he has overseen so far, with five ending in defeats and the remaining match ending as a draw.In the latest outing against Posta Rangers just before the break, the slum boys let slip a goal advantage as they succumbed to a 2-3 defeat – their 18th in 23 games – that left them rooted at the bottom of the log on 11 points, fourteen off the safe places and nine away from the relegation playoff match.FT: Mathare United 2-3 Posta Rangers 26′ K.Ochieng (P), 70′ D.Ange / 47′ T.Otieno, 53′ J.Dwang, 81′ B.Otieno #MathareVsPosta pic.twitter.com/GANxnPoc1L— Mathare United FC (@MathareUtd) March 17, 2022 Following the results, the former Thika United head coach, who has also managed the national U20 team, welcomed the break as he remained confident that there was no need to hit the panic button just yet with the remaining number of matches still offering an exit to their stuggles.”I am here because I know the job at hand and I am not panicking at all like the rest. With more than thirty points to play for, I think it is very early to start talking about relegation. For that reason, I would love to see my team get their heads up and be ready to fight. This break is a blessing to us because we physically the players are going to get some good rest and some of our injured players will be back in action,” the head coach told Mozzart Sport.© Mathare United“What we need to do during the break is to improve on the mental side of the game. The last three matches have been really positive considering from where I took the team till now. They are starting to understand what we expect from them tactically and if we can build on that and on our concentration in matches, we will be good to go. Physically we have already improved and now we just have to fight” Kamau added.
