A first half bullet fired by Dennis Cheruiyot proved enough to send APS Bomet three points clear at the summit of the National Super League as the paramilitary side beat Mombasa Elite 1-0 on Monday at the Mbaraki Stadium.Bomet were leading on goal difference grounds before the match as they were tied on 33 points with Fortune Sacco but Cheruiyot’s goal mined them three points to separate them from the Kirinyaga based side. The hard fought victory was Bomet’s second under coach Charles Odera who was appointed last month to fill in the void left by Benedict Wanjala who interestingly left the club for Elite. Odera began his tenure on a sour note as Bomet lost 3-1 to Kibera Black Stars but bounced back with a 3-0 win over Coastal Heroes last week. The former Chemelil Sugar coach who prior to joining Bomet was in charge at Muhoroni Youth lauded his players for holding on the slim advantage up to the final whistle but encouraged them to improve on their efficiency in front of the goal.Benson Gicharu: Former Olympic boxer with heart wrenching story and mental health mission”This is a huge win considering the calibre of the opponent the conditions here at coast. The players fought hard and showed that they wanted the three points. We have no time to celebrate as we have a difficult game against MCF and before then, there are areas we have to polish. I wasn’t impressed with the number of chances that went begging but at least we will have a day or two to work on it,” said the former defender who had mastermind the win alone as his assistant Darshan Lubembe is on compassionate leave. While APS will be happy to celebrate their eleventh win of the season, the Elite technical bench will have to worry of the swelling rift between them and the top two teams as they are now ten points behind the log leaders.
