Ian Otieno offers financial advice to footballers

Kenyan international Ian Otieno has offered brief financial advice to footballers in matters regarding saving, urging them to spare a coin for the rainy days.Football in the country is littered with stories of players who have experienced changes in fortunes after tasting success in their heydays but struggling to make ends meet after calling time on their career. Speaking during an event organised by one of the club’s sponsors which is a financial services holding company, Otieno urged players to save.“There’s a saying: save me now and I will serve you later. If you save, then you can look back and confidently say that I made the right decision,” said Otieno. A number of Kenyan legends failed to make sound financial decisions in their playing days which has led to them living from hand to mouth after retirement. Nairobi City Stars taken through financial literacy trainingAmidst all the stories, however, some are some former players who are still enjoying success well beyond their football careers such as MacDonald Mariga, Robert Mambo and Mike Okoth just to mention a few. Nairobi City Stars has been leading the line in offering financial advice to its fraternity, including the playing unit, the technical bench, and the management, by taking them through a financial literacy workshop by the Jonathan Jackson Foundation (JJF).
