AUGUSTA, Ga. — It pays to play well at Augusta National.
This year’s 86th Masters Tournament is setting a pair of records in regards to prize money, with the 2022 event boasting a $15 million purse, up from $11.5 million in 2021. The winner will take home $2.7 million, up from the $2.07 million Hideki Matsuyama earned last year.
Second and third place will each earn seven-figure checks, with the runner-up taking home $1.62 million and third $1.02 million.
Horton Smith earned $1,500 for his win at the first-ever Masters. Ben Crenshaw was the first six-figure winner in 1984, taking home $108,000. Tiger Woods won in 2001, the first time the Masters champion earned more than 1 million ($1,008,000).
Professional players that failed to make the cut – like Jordan Spieth, Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau – earn $10,000. The six amateur players in the field do not receive money.
