Old habits won’t die – Mourinho still helping Inter win titles twelve years after leaving

It should have been a tight match in Milan when Jose Mourinho brought his Roma side to the place where he is still adored by the Inter faithful. But rather than creating another twist in the Serie A title race, The Special One enabled Inter to make another step towards the Scudetto as the black and blues ran out 3-1 winners on Saturday night. This was one of the easier games for Inter in recent months as the Giallorossi seldom looked like a side capable of creating any sort of problem for the reigning champions of Italy. Dutch right-back Denzel Dumfries turned into a full-fledged striker with his fantastic movement and an expert finish through the legs of Rui Patricio to give Inter the lead right on the half-hour mark. Croatian midfielder Marcelo Brozovic continued his unlikely goalscoring run with a fantastic curling shot that ended up in the top corner as Mourinho looked in disgust from the dugout. This was supposed to be the day when he’d show Inter what they’ve been missing in the past decade, but tonight wasn’t the Portuguese’s night at all. Meek attempts from Tammy Abraham and Henrikh Mkhitaryan only highlighted Roma’s inability to put the Nerazzurri under any real pressure.Roma needed to show something else in the second half, but instead, they continued to allow too much space for the home attackers. Lautaro Martinez isn’t the kind of player to refuse an invitation to score – and Roma defenders should have known it. The Argentine duly found some space and finished after a Hakan Calhanoglu corner to put his team three ahead. The Turkish international himself had already come so close in the first half with a spectacular long-range rocket that was just beaten away by Rui Patricio.Former Dortmund, Arsenal and Manchester United midfielder Mkhitaryan scored a nice goal five minutes before time but it was no more than a consolation for the visitors. The victory saw Inter overtake AC Milan at the top of the table with five matchdays remaining.
