Ulinzi Starlets refuse to give up on the WPL title race

Women Premier League (WPL) Super Cup champions Ulinzi Starlets’ tactician Joseph Mwanza believes his charges still have a shot at the this season’s title. The soldiers are second on the log at 30 points but Vihiga Queens have put a rift between them and the chasers at 11 points. The three-time champions, Vihiga, look set to clinch the title, unbeaten. “We are still in the race. This is football and anything can happen. We will run our race until it gets to the point Vihiga have collected unassailable points and that can only happen three or four wins away. Before that we win our matches,” said Mwanza. The military side after picking the Women’s Cup and Super Cup looked poised to put up a fight against the star studded Vihiga Queens.Nyamunyamu focused on maintaining Vihiga Queen’s unbeaten recordHowever, the Boniface Nyamunyamu-led side has maintained their grip at the helm despite losing some key players in the lead up to the second leg. Ulinzi’s main undoing has, however, been the many draws they have registered, allowing Vihiga to create a gap. Mwanza’s charges have played for six draws, the highest number for any team in the league while losing once to Vihiga. “Most of these matches were ours for the taking. The only draw that was sort of expected was against Vihiga Queens away. However, this is part of the sport and given how my team is currently constituted, we have to accept and grow from it,” Mwanza added. The side missed some key players from the get go as former skipper Neddy Atieno called time in the sport while other experienced players left a few matches into the firat leg. “Missing the experienced legs and hands of the likes of Maureen Shimuli on goal, Lucy Mukhwana, Lucy Nato and other who left for other military duties played a part in our performance. I had to use players that had little experience in the league. That is, however, good for us as we pick our lessons this season and in the event we miss the championship, we head to the next season loaded with experienced and young players,” the tactician explained On the weekend, the soldiers host Nakuru Queens in Nairobi as they look to pick maximum points and bridge the gap between themselves and Vihiga.
