Strasbourg stand their ground against motiveless champions with a late equaliser

Strasbourg kept their hopes of securing top-tier European football for the first time in 42 years alive, as Anthony Caci’s late goal cancelled out Kylian Mbappé’s brace in a 3-3 Ligue 1 thriller at the Stade de la Meinau. Despite wrapping up the title with four games to spare, PSG have underwhelmed on their way to a record-equalling tenth Ligue 1 triumph. Here, they were caught out after just two minutes as Kevin Gameiro raced through and struck high into the net. The hosts thought they had a second with ten minutes barely on the clock, but Adrien Thomasson saw his deflected effort shot ruled out for a tight offside. The visitors, though, were not subdued for long. Having lost 16 of the last 23 matches against PSG, Strasbourg were reminded of their opponents’ quality when Mbappé netted an equaliser in the 25th minute. The champions’ only real chance of the first half saw their French superstar race onto a pass from Neymar before poking home with trademark ease. After the interval, PSG started to click into gear and completed the turnaround when Achraf Hakimi provided the final touch to finish a slick move moments past the hour mark.Four minutes later, Mbappé pounced on a mistake to net a third for PSG, his seventh goal contribution in his last four H2Hs (G4, A3). Habib Diallo did head home to halve the deficit, but it looked to be too little too late when Gameiro missed a golden chance to rescue a point, flashing an effort into the side netting with ten minutes to play. But Strasbourg found an equaliser late on as Caci steamed in at the back post to drill past Gianluigi Donnarumma between the PSG sticks in the 92nd minute.A tenth-place finish in 2018/19 is Strasbourg’s best campaign since earning promotion back to the top flight, but they could still qualify for European football this term. Meanwhile, Mauricio Pochettino’s future remains uncertain after PSG fell apart in stoppage time again.LIGUE 1FridayStrasbourg – PSG 3-3 (1-1)/Gameiro 3, Diallo 75, Caci 90+2 – Mbappe 23, 68, Hakimi 64/Saturday18.00: (1.68) Lens (3.80) Nantes (5.50)22.00: (1.38) Rennes (5.60) Saint-Etienne (9.00)Sunday14.00: (3.90) Troyes (3.15) Lille (2.24)16.00: (2.40) Brest (3.35) Clermont (3.30)16.00: (1.84) Montpellier (3.70) Metz (5.00)16.00: (2.35) Lorient (3.10) Reims (3.35)16.00: (1.40) Monaco (4.50) Angers (8.50)18.05: (3.80) Bordeaux (3.60) Nice (2.09)21.45: (2.40) Olympique Marseille (3.40) Lyon (3.15)***odds are subject to change
