Only Zetech stand in way of Vihiga Queen’s fourth WPL title

Boniface Nyamunyamu’s Vihiga Queens are on the verge of winning their fourth Women Premier League (WPL) title but the tactician is not yet celebrating. With five matches left for the league to conclude, the three-time league champions need one victory to accumulate an unassailable point difference from second-placed Ulinzi Starlets who made the job easier for Vihiga following their goalless draw against Thika Queens on Sunday. Victory for Vihiga in the next fixture seals the title for them regardless of the results from the other matches as they will have a 13-point difference from the second placed team with four matches to play. A draw for Vihiga in that match and a win for Ulinzi as they take on Trans Nzoia Falcons away in Kitale would bring the difference to 12 points with four matches to go. KWPL: Focus on second position, Vihiga Queens roar after subduing stubborn GaspoHowever, for Vihiga to lose a grip on the title, they would have to lose all the remaining four matches while Ulinzi win theirs and with score lines big enough to cover for the goal difference. As fate would have it, Vihiga host Zetech Sparks in that all-important match. On paper, Vihiga are the better side but the varsity side has proven to be no pushover in their recent streak where they have subjected holders Thika Queens and Alast season’s finalists Gaspo Women to loses. “This is a crucial fixture for us so we have to be ready for what Zetech will throw at us. We need nothing short of a victory to seal that title then push for an unbeaten run in the remaining four matches,” offered Nyamunyamu. Vihiga, who are coming off a 2-0 victory in Nairobi against Gaspo are buoyed by their first leg performance against Zetech. The side won 5-0 and Nyamunyamu is hoping to replicate that form at home. The runaway leaders will, however, miss the services of two key players in midfielder Joan Nabirye and defender Phoebe Owiti. Mercilyne Wayodi is also a doubt as she stayed out in the Gaspo match due to injury. “Nabirye is leaving to join Crested Cranes as they prepare for the African Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON) while Owiti has accumulated five yellow cards and will sit out. I am hoping to have Wayodi fit for the match as she can perfectly cover for Nabirye’s absence in the middle. We have depth in our defence and Owiti’s place will be covered. Dorcus Neema is a perfect fit for the position,” Nyamunyamu explained.
