Borussia Dortmund – a coin factory from Germany

They may have lost the race with Bayern on the field, but at least Dortmund does not have to worry about the future, because if we talk about finances, there are few clubs in the world which know how to do business like Borussia. And the case of Erling Haaland, who went to Manchester City for compensation of 60,000,000 euros, only reminded the football world how good they work in Dortmund. Their strategy is basically the most simple one: buy cheap – sell expensive. Off course, everybody knows that strategy, and many have tried it, but few managed to actually succeed. And one of the examples for that is Sebastian Haller. Former Frankfurt and West Ham striker was seen as a perfect replacement for Haaland and even Lewandowski (if he leaves Bayern), but apparently the Millionaires have given up on him, mainly because they believe they won’t be able to earn from his potential future sale since his current value (35 million euros) is too much. That is why Rems’ 19-year-old Hugo Ekitike and his peer from Sparta Prague, Adam Hlozek, are in the spotlight. The two of them, along with already bought Karim Adeyemi could continue the successful business path in Westphalia. That series is really impressive. So let’s remind ourselves.(@AFP) ERLING HAALAND(Profit 40,000,000 euros)Everyone was convinced that he would go to some of the biggest European clubs in 2020, but Haaland wisely estimated that Borussia would be a great stopover. Dortmund paid 20,000,000 euros to Salzburg, and now they have sold him to Manchester City for 60,000,000 euros, meaning they have earned 40,000,000.(@AFP) ROBERT LEWANDOWSKI(Minus 4,700,000)An already well-known story and an indicator to all scouts of how to work. Robert Lewandowski arrived in Dortmund from Lech Poznan, as a relatively anonymous player in Western Europe. His fee was a tiny 4,700,000 euros. Yes, he stabbed them in the back when he went to Bayern without compensation, but footbal wise, Lewandowski was a clear plus, having in mind what he brought on the field. And he one of rare players on whom Borussia actually lost money.OUSMANE DEMBELE(Profit 105,000,000)We could jokingly say: the fraud of the century. Borussia itself, however, paid a pretty hefty sum for the youngster from Rennes (35 million in 2016), but they needed only one year to make an enormous profit. Barcelona panicked when Neymar went to PSG and paid the Germans an incredible 140,000,000 euros for Dembele. Not a bad player, but to be fourth on the list of the most expensive in the history of football?PIERRE-EMERICK AUBAMEYANG(Profit 50,000,000)Another current Barcelona football player, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, arrived from Saint-Etienne for 13,000,000 euros in 2013. Five years later, as a proven scorer, he went to Arsenal for 63,000,000 euros. He recently went to Barcelona as a free agent after a conflict with Mikel Arteta. In Dortmund they knew how to deal with him. Maybe they learned a lesson from Lewandowski.(@AFP) ALEKSANDER ISAK(Profit 8,000,000)Again, this was another agreement with the recently deceased super-agent Mina Raiola, although more was expected here, but Alexander Isak started to justify his talent only at Real Sociedad, where he went for 15,000,000 euros. Borussia brought him from the Swedish AIK for 8,000,000.JADON SANCHO(Profit 77,160,000)If Isac was only a partial goal, Jadon Sancho was the premium. As a talented football player, he could not hope for anything in the hellish competition in Manchester City, so he went directly from the youth school to Borussia Dortmund for 7,840,000 euros. The first season was disappointing, but after all four years in Dortmund, he brought as much as 85,000,000 euros into the club’s bank by transferring to Manchester United.21:30: (4.90) Leeds (3.60) Chelsea (1.75)ILKAY GUNDOGAN(Profit 22,000,000)This is not about astronomical compensation, but Ilkay Gundogan has made a lot of money. Along the way, his playing potential was used to the maximum. Gundogan arrived in 2011 from Nuremberg for 5,000,000 euros, won the Bundesliga, played in the Champions League final and then in 2016 went to Manchester City for 27,000,000. He was probably worth even more at the time, but it is not always possible to get the highest price.Manchester City confirm: Erling Haaland is one of us!KRISTIJAN PULIŠIĆ(Profit 64,000,000)Some little guy from Pennsylvania, USA. Nobody knew who he was when he came to the youth school in 2015. He quickly made his way to the first team, shone there, and then in 2019, as an extraordinary talent, he went to Chelsea. Roman Abramovich spent 64,000,000 euros on Kristijan Pulišić.DONE DEAL: Half of the Haaland sale money has already been spentMATS HUMMELS(Profit 1,000,000)Another guy who realized in time how difficult it is to fight for his place under the sun in a top club. Mats Hummels walked the other road. As a youngster, he left Bayern for only 4,000,000 euros, became a player in Dortmund who led the German national team to the title of world champion, and then returned to Munich in 2016 for 35,000,000 euros. Borussia brought him in 2019 for 30,000,000 euros and still were in plus.(@AFP) HENRIKH MKHITARYAN(Profit 15,000,000)He shone in Shakhtar Donetsk, and it was already clear back than that he can do much. Borussia was the fastest and brought him for 27,000,000 euros. When a big reconstruction followed in 2016, Dortmund let him go to Manchester United for 42,000,000 euros. He has never played football like in Dortmund since. So, all in all, even with a subtraction of 4,700,000 euros from Lewandowski loss – although we agreed that he was by no means a minus – Borussia earned a net 377,460,000 euros! Enough to cover up some misses and still gain a substantial profit.
