The draw for the 2022 CECAFA Senior Women’s Championship scheduled for May-June in Uganda has been conducted.Eight teams that will be participating in the competition have been pooled into two groups where they will be fighting for the title that was won by Kenya when the tournament was last held in Tanzania.Of the 11 CECAFA members, three of them will miss the tournament. Kenya is out by the virtue of being suspended by FIFA while Eritrea and Sudan opted against taking part in the annual competition.The tournament, which will be staged at FUFA Technical Centre in Njeru will be making a comeback after a three-year break due to Covid-19 but the holders Kenya will not participate with the country currently serving a FIFA suspension meaning we will have a new winner.The highest-ranked nation in the region Tanzania and Uganda were seeded which automatically saw them be on top of the two groups: Uganda in group A and Tanzania in B.The CECAFA Women’s Championship returns this year after a three-year absence.Eight teams will take part, but holders Kenya are out for obvious reasons.The 2019 edition was Jentrix Shikangwa’s breakout tournament.#CecafaWomenChampionship pic.twitter.com/lIU48L8T8H— Ole Teya (@Kevin_teya) May 11, 2022 In Group A, Uganda was joined By Burundi Rwanda, and Djibouti while Group B has Tanzania, Zanzibar, Ethiopia and South Sudan.The exact kick off dates will be confirmed by CECAFA on Thursday.CECAFA Secretary General Auka Gecheo says the main aim of this year’s tournament is to give Uganda and Burundi who will be representing the region at the African Women Cup of Nations (AWCON) good preparations ahead of the tournament that kicks off in early July.”I can confirm that the tournament is in Uganda, what I cannot confirm is the date of the tournament. After my meeting with CAF later today everything will be clearer and we will be able to communicate the date of the tournament by Thursday evening.
