Coaching carousel: Schreuder instead of Ten Hag, Watford replace Hodgson with a fourth-tier coach

After letting him take one of the most difficult managerial positions in the world, Ajax decided to swap Erik Ten Hag with current Club Brugge manager Alfred Schreuder. The Dutch was appointed head coach of Dutch giants Ajax on Thursday, and will take the helm at the Netherlands’ most successful club next month, with his contract running until June 30, 2024.Harambee Starlets defender links up with her new club in Europe”Becoming head coach at Ajax is an honour and a great opportunity for me, which I’ll grab with both hands. It’s great to be back, because I had a great time at Ajax for the year-and-half I worked at the club” said Schreuder, who worked as Ten Hag’s assistant in 2018.In 2020 he joined Ronald Koeman as assistant at Barcelona before getting the head coach job at Club Brugge.”We know Alfred as a tactically strong coach with a good and versatile practice regime. We are very confident that he will be able to continue the path we took with Ajax a few years ago, both in the Eredivisie and in the UEFA Champions League” Ajax chief executive Edwin van der Sar said.Welcome back, boss! #ForTheFuture ⚪️🔴⚪— AFC Ajax (@AFCAjax) May 12, 2022 Unlike Ajax, who replaced one coach with his assistant, who will keep the system and club culture in place, Premier League club Watford took another path. After they were officially relegated last week, and former England boss Roy Hodgson announced his second and final retirement, the Hornets hired Rob Edwards from fourth-tier champions Forest Green.Watford Football Club is delighted to confirm the appointment of Rob Edwards as our new Head Coach, effective after the conclusion of the current 2021/22 season.#WatfordFC— Watford Football Club (@WatfordFC) May 11, 2022 Hodgson was on a short-term contract after arriving to succeed the sacked Claudio Ranieri and was unable to prolong Watford’s one-season stay in the top-flight. Edwards quit Forest Green after leading them to promotion from League Two, but he departed on bad terms with the club’s owner Dale Vince, who claimed Watford had negotiated the deal behind his back. The 39-year-old is the latest in a long list of managers hired by Watford’s demanding owners the Pozzo Family, and he will become Watford’s eighth permanent manager since the start of 2018.So, after a long list of famous international managers, Watford are going for an dark horse candidate, a manager who was at the helm of England’s Under-16 team and Wolves’ Under-23s, and also Wolves on an interim basis in 2016, before taking over non-league Telford United and Forest Green. We will see if the change of approach will be good for Watford.
