The first Chelsea signing of the post-Abramovich era is a surprisingly frugal – but also wise

For a long time, noises were coming out of the black and blue camp that their Croatian veteran wingback Ivan Perisic would not renew his contract with the Italian giants. Those were his wage demands all along, and Inter could have matched them, but they remained tough and wouldn’t offer the 2018 World Cup runner-up more than $4.7 million for another two seasons. Their loss is Chelsea’s gain.The London club entered a new era when the sale to the Todd Boehly-led consortium was confirmed last week. While the supporters will undoubtedly look to new owners to emulate Roman Abramovich’s business model of always signing the very best players regardless of the price, the first signing may seem underwhelming.
