Klopp changed nine starters, but the outcome is the same: Liverpool win to set up final day thriller

Liverpool came back from behind to win 2-1 in Southampton and keep their title chances alive with only one matchday to go.Goals from Takumi Minamino and Joel Matip cancelled out Nathan Redmond’s opener as the Reds claimed three deserved points – despite resting many first-team players.Jurgen Klopp made a bold move by fielding a mixed starting eleven on this must-win trip to St Mary’s Stadium, seemingly determined to keep his key players fresh for the fast-approaching Champions League final. There was a feeling that changing nine players of your starting eleven isn’t the best decision when you’re desperate to still be in the title race ahead of the final matchday of the season. The start of the match certainly didn’t go according to plan. The Saints’ attacking midfielder Redmond cut in from the left flank and curled a shot that bounced off James Milner and beat the diving Alisson. Less than a quarter-hour in, Klopp’s team faced the possibility of handing the title to City. However, the hosts did little to build on their lead, and they allowed Liverpool to keep on coming after them until their defence buckled.Diogo Jota played a ball into the box for the former Saints loanee Minamino. Even though he wasn’t positioned ideally, the Japanese international struck a powerful effort into the near corner from a narrow angle to level. He didn’t celebrate his strike out of respect for the fans who cheered him on during his stint at St Mary’s.There was only one team after the restart and it looked like it was only a matter of time before Liverpool would get the lead. It duly arrived, albeit from a player few expected to score.Matip’s goalbound header bounced off the head of Kyle Walker-Peters and looped beyond Alex McCarthy to ensure that we have an exciting final day of the season on Sunday.Whether it’s really going to be exciting or not depends on Manchester City, who still hold the keys to the trophy.PREMIER LEAGUESundayTottenham – Burnley 1-0 (1-0)/Kane 45+8 pen/Aston Villa – Crystal Palace 1-1 (0-0)/Watkins 69 – Schlupp 81/Leeds – Brighton 1-1 (0-1)/Struijk 90+2 – Welbeck 21/Watford – Leicester 1-5 (1-2)/Pedro 6 – Maddison 18, Vardy 22, 70, Barnes 46, 86/Wolverhampton – Norwich 1-1 (0-1)/Nouri 55- Pukki 37/West Ham – Man.City 2-2 (2-0)/Bowen 24, 45 – Grealish 49, Coufal (og) 69/Everton – Brentford 2-3 (2-1)/Calvert-Lewin 10, Richailson (p) 45 – Coleman (og) 37, Wissa 62, Henry 64/MondayNewcastle – Arsenal 2-0 (0-0)/White 55 og, Guimaraes 85/TuesdaySouthampton – Liverpool 1-2 (1-1)/Redmond 13 – Minamino 27, Matip 67/Thursday21.45: (1.99) Everton (3.60) Crystal Palace (4.50)22.00: (1.43) Chelsea (4.90) Leicester (9.00)22.00: (2.14) Aston Villa (3.50) Burnley (3.80)***odds are subject to change
