Gor Mahia striker Benson Omala is elated after he bagged the club’s April Player of the month accolade earlier this week.The youngster saw off competition from Peter Lwasa and Alpha Onyango to bag the award that comes with Ksh. 25,000 courtesy of the club partners. The award is meant to motivate players from Gor Mahia and Ingwe to perform well and increase competition in the team.The 20-year-old, who is a full Kenyan international garnered 61% of the votes cast by fans online with Uganda winger Lwasa coming a distant second with 22% of the votes, Alpha, a product of the team’s youth setup finished third with 17%.He became the sixth recipient of the award after Frank Odhiambo who has since departed to Sweden, Austin Odhiambo, Boniface Omondi, Samuel Onyango and George Odhiambo and the former Western Stima attacker could not hide his joy at being feted.Omala wins Gor Mahia’s monthly gong”It’s a plus for me and a motivation to work even harder. I also want to thank my teammates because without their help I would not have bagged this award; I laud them for the effort they put in helping me win this award and we will keep working hard to improve both as individuals and as a team,” he stated.The youngster further lauded the club partners for coming up with the initiative to reward the playing unit every month.”It is a good initiative by the sponsor and a motivation for the players because they push themselves hard knowing at the end of the month there is an award to win,” he added.Omala will be hoping to continue with his good form when Gor takes on Nairobi City Stars on Sunday at Kasarani Stadium.
