Four top flight clubs salivate for hefty cash prizes in the first edition of the Lidonde Cup

It’s all systems go for next weekend’s Elijah Lidonde Memorial Cup that will be staged at the Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega with the organizers saying everything is in place for the tournament that will be used to honour the Ingwe great who passed on in 1987 and also promote peace and cohesion heading to the August polls.Lidonde, a former AFC Leopards and Harambee Stars captain passed on in 1987 and is regarded as one of the best players to don the Leopards kit. Four Premier League clubs have been invited for the tournament that will be played on 9th and 10th July in Kakamega.##NAJAVA_MECA_6483283##The four teams are AFC Leopards, Vihiga Bullets who recently got relegated from the top flight, 2021/22 FKF Premier League runners-up, Kakamega Homeboyz and Bungoma-based Nzoia Sugar FC. There will also be a team formed by Ingwe legends and one from Valon, one of the tournament’s sponsors.Tony Lidonde, son of the fallen hero who also turned out for AFC Leopards and later served as club team manager says everything is set for the tournament and he believes that the two-day event will be a great success.“Everything is set and the tournament will go on as scheduled. This tournament is more than just an ordinary football competition because it will bring people together, the football family. The legends, current players, and administrators will have a chance to interact, share ideas and we are looking forward to a successful tournament,” Lidonde told Mozzart Sport.The winner of the tournament will walk home with a cool one million while the second-placed team will get half a million. We have managed to get money from sponsors, friends, and other partners. The winners will walk away with Ksh. 1 million, the losing finalists will get half a million, the team that finishes third gets three hundred thousand while the fourth-placed side will walk home with two-hundred and fifty thousand shillings,” he added.This is the first edition of the tournament with other departed legends set to be honoured in the coming years.
