Legacy Football Academy from Kenya was off to a flying start at the world’s largest international youth football tournament dubbed Gothia Cup, edging out two Swedish teams in their opening matches.They beat Jarla IF 2-0 on Monday before easing their way past another Swedish side, IFK Orb on Tuesday to continue their perfect start in the competition that culminates this Saturday.Following the explosive start, Legacy Football Academy is second in their pool, tied on six points with French side FC Chambly who have a superior goal difference and thus occupy the top spot, with both teams making it to the knockout stage.The two sides, Legacy Football Academy and FC Chambly face off in the last group match today starting at 3 PM EAT.Since its inception in 1975 over one million players from 149 countries have taken part in the tournament which draws 1700 teams from 80 nations annually, seeing 4500 games on 110 pitches in the city of Gothenburg, Sweden.Legacy Football Academy was pioneered by former Harambee Stars coach Stanley Okumbi and holds its sessions at the Karura Forest grounds every weekend.The Kenyan academy is using the platform to expose the players to professional football clubs who usually send their scouts in a bid to unearth the next best footballer.The academy has also set a target of gracing the finals of the tournament where their players will stand a better chance of being scouted.In May this year, the Kenyan football academy had a strong showing with their U11 side at the Salt Mine Cup in Poland, a tournament graced by Liverpool, Sporting CP from Portugal, Dinamo Zagreb, Banik Ostrava among others.
