Gor Mahia’s Samuel Onyango has revealed the two main reasons as to why the record Kenyan champions struggled to challenge for the title in the 2021/2022 Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKFPL) campaign. In the very challenging season owing to the FIFA suspension imposed on the country, K’Ogalo finished in third place on 55 points, eight behind Tusker who successfully defended their title after staging an impressive fightback especially after a sluggish start to the season.Having hardly challenged for the title all through the campaign, the third place finish meant that the 19 time Kenyan champions, for the first time since 2013, went for two consecutive seasons without clinching a league title as they had finished the 2020/2021 league campaign in a disastrous 8th position on the log.🟢 | SEASON REVIEW 2021-22 FKF Premier league top scorers➡️Peter Lwasa – 8️⃣➡️Sammy Onyango – 7️⃣➡️Benson Omalla – 6️⃣➡️George Odhiambo – 5️⃣#Sirkal pic.twitter.com/Ia2bHMj2bC— GOR MAHIA FC (@OfficialGMFC) June 30, 2022 On the back of those two barren spells for the most decorated club in the country, Onyango shed light on why the team found a hard time to fight with Tusker and Kakamega Homeboyz who went neck and neck for the top honours.”The main reason as to why we failed to contend for the title is because of the financial challenges we had and the ban imposed on us by FIFA. No matter how much we shy from them, those are the two main things that affected us.Due to the ban, we had a very thin squad and that meant we could not rotate the squad whenever the players got fatigued. As a player, you need to rest and recharge at some point in order to give top performances but that was not possible for us.As for finance, we have families and things to take care of. So, when your mind is not settled due to finances not being enough or delaying, you cannot give your best performance and that played a big part in our season,” the player said.🟢 | MATCH DAY Our last match… we close the season today with a league tie against Talanta FC at Kasarani Stadium from 3pm. #Sirkal | #Betsafe pic.twitter.com/i3acMJJTUA— GOR MAHIA FC (@OfficialGMFC) June 8, 2022 Back in November 2021, Gor Mahia were banned from signing players for two consecutive transfer windows for failing to comply with the initial directive not to bring in new signings in the previous window for breaching the contracts of former players and coach – Ugandan Shafik Batambuze, Dickson Ambundo from Tanzania and coach Steven Polack. But with the club recently landing a three year 70 million sponsorship deal, Onyango is certain the club will once again roar to glory in the coming season set to kick off on 27 August 2022.“With the new sponsor, over half of our problems will be solved and the results on the field will be there to be seen. I am certain we will reclaim back our title because we are not used to going for two seasons without a title,” he concluded.##NAJAVA_MECA_6514910##
