Doubles for Zaha and Adams as Palace and Southampton take maximum points on Saturday afternoon

What a day for football! We’ve seen 14 goals in four Saturday afternoon matches in the Premier League, with Fulham, Crystal Palace and Southampton getting famous wins in the sunshine. The most dramatic match was seen in west London, where Mitrogol scored the winner in a five-goal thriller against the Bees! Two neighbouring clubs met at Craven Cottage, battling for supremacy in the neighbourhood. Fulham had a strong start to the season but were still winless. They looked keen on changing that and were 1-0 ahead inside the first minute against Brentford when Bobby Reid sent the home crowd berserk.Portuguese midfielder Palhinha scored a towering header from a corner to double the lead, but Brentford didn’t look like a beaten team and they found a way into the match with a well-taken corner routine that saw Christian Norgaard volley firmly past Bernd Leno. And then came Ivan Toney. Brentford’s best goalscorer had already had two goals flagged offside, but the third counted! He smashed it in and made it 2-2 with 20 minutes to go.But the last laugh belongs to Aleksandar Mitrovic! The iconic striker headed in a 90th-minute goal from a Kevin Mbabu cross to send the crowd wild. Fulham win 3-2!Many years ago, Patrick Vieira and Steven Gerrard were facing each other on the football pitch, but on Saturday afternoon, they were in opposing dugouts of a Premier League game as Crystal Palace and Aston Villa went head to head at Selhurst Park. The former Liverpool skipper had the better start for sure, as he watched Ollie Watkins run clear onto a Leon Baily forward header and finish confidently with Vicente Guaita powerless. But that lead didn’t last long.It was a busy day for many players, but Ezri Konsa has had a torrid time indeed. He couldn’t catch up with Palace’s captain Wilfried Zaha, who escaped from the centre of the pitch and slid a pinpoint shot past Konsa and Emiliano Martinez to level.Jeffrey Schlupp thought he’d made it 2-1 when he controlled and tucked in a ball laid off by Odsonne Edouard, but it didn’t count. But Zaha continued to plug away. He made it 2-1 from the rebound after Martinez initially palmed his penalty away. Jean-Philippe Mateta secured the points with a firm finish just a minute after coming from the bench. Vieira was punching the air while Gerrard was staring in disgust.

In Leicester, James Maddison gave his team the lead over Southampton with a free kick, but Che Adams scored two great goals for the Saints to turn the game on its head and secure three points for the south coast club.Nottingham Forest got a shocking goal ten minutes before the final whistle at Goodison Park, but Demarai Gray levelled late on to ease the pressure on his boss Frank Lampard.ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE – MATCHDAY 3SaturdayTottenham – Wolverhampton 1-0 (0-0)/Kane 64/Crystal Palace – Aston Villa 3-1 (1-1)/Zaha 7, 58, Mateta 71 – Watkins 5/Everton – Nott.Forest 1-1 (0-0)/Gray 88 – Johnson 81/Fulham – Brentford 3-2 (2-1)/Reid 1, Palhinha 20, Mitrovic 90 – Norgaard 44, Toney 71/Leicester – Southampton 1-2 (0-0)/Maddison 54 – Adams 68, 84/19.30: (8.50) Bournemouth (4.50) Arsenal (1.45)Sunday 16.00: (6.25) Leeds (4.00) Chelsea (1.55)16.00: (2.35) West Ham (3.30) Brighton (3.35)18.30: (8.50) Newcastle (4.50) Man.City (1.40)Monday 22.00: (5.70) Man.Utd.
