Prior to the Nairobi region school games, few had heard about Waylight School but despite their obscurity, they managed to upset traditional school football powerhouses to qualify for nationals with their head coach Eric Odhiambo detailing how they managed the outstanding feat.The Komarock-based school managed to upset traditional top guns as they eliminated Olympic Secondary School and Jamhuri High School on their way to the final where they beat Highway 1-0.KSSSA Games: Minnows Waylight stun Highway in Nairobi region football finalOdhiambo who has been with the school for some time now revealed that the foundations of qualifying for the national school games kicked off back in 2018 as they used scholarships to lure top players.“We started this project of nurturing talents way back in 2018 and we gave some of our students scholarships because most of our players are either orphans or partial orphans.We decided to help the kids because football is just a stepping stone for them, we also want them to get quality education and we are glad it is finally paying off,” said Odhiambo.Despite being relatively unknown, Waylight came close to sealing a slot in the Nairobi region school games back in 2019 after they were eliminated by Dagoretti High School in the semis.Odhiambo revealed that during the two-year school games break occasioned by the Covid-19 pandemic, he registered the school in the lower leagues to keep the students in top shape.Ofafa Jericho edge Upper Hill to be crowned Nairobi region 7s champions“In 2019 we were able to register our team into the Federation league and that has kept us going despite the period having no school games and that is what made us champions.I’m part of FKF Nairobi East Branch and we are looking forward to partnering with schools by giving their games teachers refresher courses so that they can nurture talent better,” added Odhiambo.
