BVB battle to the top thanks to captain Marco

Borussia Dortmund’s matches are often goal fests, which is great for the neutrals – but is often damaging to the yellow-blacks. This time, they’ve taken a different approach. An early goal. Tight at the back. One goal, three points. Thank you, and good night. On Friday night, Borussia climbed to the top of the Bundesliga standings thanks to captain Marco Reus’ early winner against Hoffenheim at Signal Iduna Park.Revelation Jamie Bynoe-Gittens’ pass reached Julian Brandt, who played a sublime pass into space for the onrushing Reus. The captain made no mistake and struck the ball in to give his team the lead – something he’s done an incredible 60 times throughout his Bundesliga career.Edin Terzic’s team controlled the match well after going ahead and had a chance to double the lead through Anthony Modeste. However, the recent signing from Koln spurned a huge chance to double the lead when he uncharacteristically failed to hit the target with his header. Moments later, he turned provider for Bynoe-Gittens, but the youngster also wasted his opening. Hoffenheim were hanging on, and were perhaps fortunate to avoid conceding a penalty when Ozan Kabak seemed to deliberately block Marius Wolf’s cross with his arm.Visiting goalkeeper Oliver Baumann was on hand to deny Jude Bellingham and Reus in the minutes approaching the break, but it wasn’t all good for Dortmund, who lost Bynoe-Gittens to a shoulder injury. The Yellow Wall always hits different 🔊(via @BVB) pic.twitter.com/aqUBl24s9x— B/R Football (@brfootball) September 2, 2022 Andre Breitenreiter’s team was so inferior that he was forced to make a triple substitution at the break to try and change the game. Those changes had a positive effect, with Georginio Rutter and Andrej Kramaric having good chances to equalise. Hoffenheim’s clear improvement spread anxiety through the home crowd, who had seen their side lose a two-goal lead in the 89th minute in their last game on this ground. With that collapse fresh in his mind, Terzic introduced Niklas Sule and switched to a back-five in an attempt to solidify his defence. The change worked well, and Dortmund closed out an important victory.BUNDESLIGA – MATCHDAY 5Friday Borussia Dortmund – Hoffenheim 1-0 (1-0)/Reus 16/Saturday16.30: (2.04) Leverkusen (3.70) Freiburg (3.90)16.30: (3.05) Bochum (3.40) Werder (2.50)16.30: (8.50) Union Berlin (5.60) Bayern (1.41)16.30: (1.86) Stuttgart (3.70) Schalke (4.80)16.30: (2.21) Wolfsburg (3.50) Koln (3.60)19.30: (3.80) Eintr.Frankfurt (3.60) RB Leipzig (2.09)Sunday 16.30: (2.63) Augsburg (3.30) Hertha (3.00)18.30: (2.30) M’ gladbach (3.50) Mainz (3.35)***odds are subject to change
