The champions remain true when it matters: Rafael Leao and old boy Giroud shine in Derby win

Serie A champions Milan beat their city rivals Inter 3-1 in a thrilling Derby Della Madonnina on Saturday night. Even though Nerazzurri took the lead, Milan raced to a 3-1 lead thanks to two great goals from Rafael Leao and a fortunate finish by Olivier Giroud. Edin Dzeko scored to make it an exciting 20 minutes, but Stefano Pioli’s reigning champions held on to claim the victory.Joaquín Correa, who stepped in for Romelu Lukaku, passed perfectly to Marcelo Brozovic, who was unmarked to slot past Mike Maignan. Stunned by conceding the opener, the Rossoneri fought back emphatically to equalise. Sandro Tonali’s perfectly-weighted pass allowed Leao to shoot first time, and the Portuguese expertly found the far corner.Milan’s intensity only grew after the leveller, with Giroud and Theo Hernandez missing spectacular efforts to take the lead.Giroud put Milan ahead ten minutes after the break when he met the irrepressible Leao’s low cross with a scuffed finish which squeaked past Samir Handanovic. Leao then nearly brought the house down six minutes later, a jinking run leaving him in front of Handanovic just meters from goal, where he made no mistake.Substitute Dzeko pulled a goal back seven minutes later, and then Maignan stepped in to keep resurgent Inter out and ensure Milan claimed local bragging rights and top spot. However, they also had the magnificent Maignan to thank for the three points after the France goalkeeper pulled off four superb stops from Lautaro Martinez, Edin Dzeko and Hakan Calhanoglu.SERIE A – MATCHDAY 5SaturdayFiorentina – Juventus 1-1 (1-1)/Kouame 29 – Milik 9/Milan – Inter 3-2 (1-1)/Leao 28, 60, Giroud 54 – Brozovic 21, Dzeko 67/21.45: (3.00) Lazio (3.40) Napoli (2.55)Sunday 13.30: (3.25) Cremonese (3.40) Sassuolo (2.40)16.00: (3.05) Spezia (3.35) Bologna (2.55)19.00: (2.14) Verona (3.50) Sampdoria (3.80)21.45: (4.20) Udinese (3.60) Roma (1.99)Monday 19.30: (6.25) Monza (4.30) Atalanta (1.61)19.30: (2.40) Salernitana (3.35) Empoli (3.30)21.45: (1.84) Torino (3.70) Lecce (5.00)***odds are subject to change
