Group of Death comes to life: Bayern outclass Inter, Lewandowski gets another hat-trick

Robert Lewandowski scored another hat-trick as his Barcelona swept the floor with Czech champions Plzen on Wednesday night. In the same group, Bayern may have scored only two goals at Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, but their opponents, Inter were painfully inferior compared to Bundesliga holders. We’ve got a group full of class on our hands.Former Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana had already pulled off two world-class saves to deny Sadio Mane and Thomas Muller early on. Still, he couldn’t do anything when Josua Kimmich and Leroy Sane played out a simple move, leaving the latter to control a deep ball, round Onana and slot into the unguarded net.The hosts were overwhelmed by the Bavarians throughout. The Nerazzurri created very little and paid for one of their defensive lapses that have been a constant in this early part of the season. Their midfield of Hakan Calhanoglu, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Marcelo Brozovic couldn’t create anything and left Edin Dzeko and Lautaro Martinez with little or no service. The Bavarians looked like they could score more goals, and Julian Nagelsmann was craving at least one more to ensure a fuss-free night. Kingsley Coman was unlucky not to fulfil his coach’s wish when he rattled the Inter defence and slapped a shot from within the box, but Milan Skriniar got to him just in time to deflect that ball behind for a corner. But another fantastic move from the German team ended in another effort from Sane that was pushed into his own net by Danilo D’Ambrosio. It was game over for Inter event though there were 20 minutes left. The other match in Group C offered less drama but still plenty of action and three more goals from the indestructible Robert Lewandowski in a 5-1 victory over Viktoria Plzen. It was Franck Kessie who opened the scoring against the champions of the Czech Republic at Camp Nou. The Ivorian midfielder got his first goal for the club since his free transfer from AC Milan in the close season. His header just a quarter-hour into the game ensured a free-flowing match.Robert Lewandowski has seven goals in five games this season. The Czechs didn’t kid themselves, though – they felt the power of a Barcelona side in full swing. Substitute Ferran Torres got another goal with a sweet left-footed volley from yet another Ousmane Dembele assist. It may be early days still, but it looks like Bayern are a class above the rest in this group. We’re yet to see if Barcelona will be a genuine force in this season’s Champions League. We’re all eyes.UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE – MATCHDAY 1Tuesday Dinamo Zagreb – Chelsea 1-0 (1-0)/Orsic 13/Dortmund – Copenhagen 3-0 (2-0)/Reus 35, Guerreiro 42, Bellingham 83/Salzburg – Milan 1-1 (1-0)/Saelemaekers 40 – Okafor 28/Celtic – Real Madrid 0-3 (0-0)/Junior 56, Modric 60, Hazard 77/RB Leipzig – Shakhtar 1-4 (0-1)/Simakan 57 – Shved 16, 58, Mydruk 76, Traore 85/Sevilla – Man City 0-4 (0-1)/Haaland 20, 67, Foden 58, Dias 90+2/Benfica – Maccabi Haifa 2-0 (0-0)/Silva 49, Grimaldo 54/PSG – Juventus 2-1 (2-0)/Mbappe 5, 22 – McKennie 53/Wednesday Ajax – Rangers 4-0 (3-0)/Alvarez 17, Berghuis 32, Kudus 33, Bergwijn 80/Eintracht Frankfurt – Sporting CP 0-3 (0-0)/Edwards 65, Trincao 67, Santos 82/Atletico Madrid – Porto 2-1 (0-0)/Hermoso 90+2, Griezmann 90+11 – Uribe 90+6 pen/Barcelona – Viktoria Plzen 5-1 (3-1)/Kessie 13, Lewandowski 34, 45+3, 68, Torres 71 – Sykora 44/Club Brugge – Bayer Leverkusen 1-0 (1-0)/Sylla 42/Inter – Bayern 0-2 (0-1)/Sane 25, D’Ambrosio 66 og/Napoli – Liverpool 4-1 (3-0)/Zielinski 5 pen, 47, Anguissa 31, Simeone 44 – Diaz 49/Tottenham – Olympique de Marseille 2-0 (0-0)/Richarlison 76, 81/
