On the last day of August, AS Monaco were thrashed at home from Troyes 4-2, just a week after a wonderful display against PSG in Paris. It was a tough and unexpected loss, but Philippe Clement’s men first managed to win in Nice, then won 1-0 in Europa League on Thursday, and with tonight’s win over Lyon, they are definitely on the right path. The guests had plenty of possession and kept the pace throughout the game, but in the end missed one colossal chance for the equalizer and now came into crisis of their own, with second consecutive defeat.
After both teams huffed and puffed in the opening 15 minutes, newcomer Breel Embolo, who finally got a start wasted a great chance. A perfect Vanderson cross found Embolo unmarked in the box, but the Swiss forward’s header was right down the throat of Lopes, who saved it easily. The guests had a double chance in the same attack in the 22nd minute, but Caqueret’s shot was blocked, before Lacazette’s shot was saved by Nubel. Lyon was dominant in possession until the end of the half, but home’s Golovin had the best chance in the 44th minute, when Lopes prevented a volley goal from the Russian.The guests continued with initiative in the second half, and as we waited on them to capitalize the advantage they had, it was Monaco who scored two relatively quick goals and ended the match with ease. Benoit Badiashile positioned himself well in the penalty area and when Karl Toko Ekambi missed the ball, he converted a header with ease: 1-0. Lyon pushed until the very end, and Dembele missed the chance of the match, when he was face to face with keeper Nubel but managed only to shoot him in the face.
