Newly-appointed Sofapaka goalkeepers’ trainer David Okello says he elected to call time on his career as an active player in order to give room to upcoming players. Okello called it a day at the end of the past season after a massive eighteen seasons in the top flight.The former Kenyan international did not tarmac in search for a new job as Sofapaka offered him a goalkeepers’ trainer duties replacing the experienced Sunil Shah.Okello said his exit from the competitive stage will certainly give the younger blood a chance to showcase their talent.##NAJAVA_MECA_6686238##“I have had an exemplary 18-year career, and I felt it was time to hang my gloves and focus on a new adventure. I have been seeing lots of young players coming up and it was time to give the young bloods a chance to showcase their talents,” he told Sofapaka media.I will restore Sofapaka’s lost glory-David OumaOkello who played for Sofapaka between 2012 to 2015 having joined from Thika United said he was glad to start his coaching career at the club. He said joining Batoto Ba Mungu was an easy decision considering that he understood the values of the club and its ambitions.” It is a huge honor to be back at the club in a new role as the goalkeepers’ trainer. I was never expecting to begin my coaching career at the club, but when the management contacted me, I didn’t have any hesitation because the club feels like home and is definitely going to give me the perfect start to my coaching career,” he said.Sofapaka clears dues owed to former playersWith the new season set to kick off late in the month, the former Tusker custodian feels that the club will have one of the solid goalkeeping departments given the talent therein. The quartet of Mathias Kigonya, Kevin Omondi, Simon Masaka and David Obasanjo will all be jostling for game time.“Goalkeeping plays a massive role in the teams’ overall performance. Since rejoining the team, I have noticed areas of concern, and I already have my work cut out to address those areas. I have a good set of goalies who are also experienced,” he added.
