EUROPA LEAGUE: Arsenal qualify for the knockout state courtesy of Xhaka’s goal

Mission accomplished; Arsenal won the Group A of the Europa League with a narrow win over PSV Eindhoven at the Emirates: 1-0. Captain Granit Xhaka scored the winning (and the only) goal in the 70th minute and topped another good Arsenal performance. Unlike other games this season, there were not many goals scored in this match, but the Gunners were better opponents and deserved a win. Mathematically, they needed only a draw in order to qualify for the knockout stage, but they won it anyway, extending the winning streak to four straight wins in this competition and eight in a row in all competitions.Arsenal this season: WWWWWLWWWWWWWW pic.twitter.com/aZGgA4SBHL— B/R Football (@brfootball) October 20, 2022 Granit Xhaka, Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Jesus all keep their places from the 1-0 win at Leeds but Rob Holding, Kieran Tierney, Sambi Lokonga, Fabio Vieira and Eddie Nketiah were recalled for PSV. Winning the group is rewarded with a bye for the round of 32, something which could prove even more vital in a season where a winter World Cup has truncated the calendar.Arsenal were dominating possession, dictating the tempo and reducing PSV to very little in the first half, but to be fair, of all 9 shots attempted at PSV’s goal none was on target. It looked like it’s just a matter of time before they scored, but guest keeper Benitez was not tested at all. The Gunners registered two half chances, one in the 11th minute when Saka started the action, the ball came to Kieran Tierney, but he blazed it over and the second in the 20th minute, when Gabriel Jesus’ shot went just near the post.PSV had a good chance in the 54th minute, but Simons blasted the ball over the bar. Arsenal were even more dangerous minutes later, but Benitez has a great save after a Jesus shot. The Gunners eventually scored in the 70th minute, when Xhaka was left alone in the penalty area and used a cross from Tomiyasu to score the winning goal, after which we haven’t seen much until the very end.Group A postponed matchThursdayArsenal – PSV 1-0 (0-0)/Xhaka 70/
