Graham Potter returns to Brighton and finds Seagulls’ droppings on his shoulders

Some returns are happy, some not so much. Graham Potter had one of those latter ones as his Chelsea suffered a 3-1 loss against his former club Brighton in the Premier League. If you could bottle irony, you would have gotten unlimited supplies of it on the south coast of England on Saturday evening. Potter returned to the Amex and endured the first defeat with his new team. It was a surreal day for Potter, who had to endure the infamous “You’re getting sacked in the morning” chant from the fans who cheered for him less than two months ago.Leandro Trossard is quickly becoming the main man for Seagulls’ new head coach Roberto De Zerbi. The Belgian forward showed some fine footwork when he picked up a ball from Kaoru Mitoma, rounded Kepa Arrizabalaga and slotted into the far corner to give his team the lead just five minutes into the game.Chelsea were still reeling from the early blow when the things got even worse. Solly March’s corner was knocked by Ruben Loftus-Cheek into his own net. And that’s when the Brighton fans started to ridicule their old coach. “Sacked in the morning, you’re getting sacked in the morning.”Chelsea players scored another goal, but once again they did it in the wrong end of the pitch. Just before the break, Trevoh Chalobah knocked a ball past Kepa and the scoreline read 3-0 to the hosts.Sadly, we weren’t there in the away dressing room, although it must has been interesting to head the kind of half-time talk from Potter. But whatever he said, his team started the second half brightly and quickly managed to pull one goal back.Kai Havertz headed past Robert Sanchez from a wonderful Conor Gallagher cross. It looked like a spectacular comeback was on the cards, with nearly all of the second 45 minutes left.Substitutes Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Ben Chilwell combined well with 20 minutes to go, but the former’s shot was kept out by Sanchez as the Blues desperately pushed forward. Potter’s men ran out of steam and Pascal Gross put them out of their misery deep in added time, making it 4-1 on a terrible day for the Blues and their boss.FT: Brighton 4-1 ChelseaGraham Potter is handed his first Chelsea loss by his former club 😬 pic.twitter.com/A64oWR6InX— B/R Football (@brfootball) October 29, 2022 Not all returns are happy.
