Mwalala explains Ulinzi’s midfield selection against Ingwe

Ulinzi Stars head coach Benard Mwalala has come out to explain his midfield selection in the 2-0 loss to AFC Leopards at the Ulinzi Sports Complex on Saturday afternoon. The former Kakamega Homeboyz tactician went for a naturally defensive trio of Benard Ongoma and new signings Francis Omondi and Jacob Onyango, a decision that might have reduced the team’s creative options.I do not understand why Mwalala is fielding three defensive midfielders.Francis Omondi, Benard Ongoma, and Jacob Onyango. No creativity.#FKFPL— Murimi Njiru (@muriminjirujnr) November 19, 2022 While at Kakamega Homeboyz, Omondi played as a defensive midfielder same as Onyango while at Bidco United, with Ongoma playing the same position at Ulinzi in recent seasons.According to Mwalala, his selection was not an attempt to shut the midfield as Onyango, the former Bidco man, was deployed as a number ten and had the free role, which to many it might not have seemed to work.”Jacob Onyango was not playing the defensive role, he was playing as a number ten which is the playmaker of the team. i think after the got the goal we tried to tried to push more and get more goals ourselves and I think he did well in that position. I did not shut the midfield, Onyango was to play the free role and I think he did well the only problem was that we did not get goals,” Mwalala said.Ingwe thrash hapless Ulinzi Stars at the ComplexChasing the game, Ulinzi were forced to make changes after the break with Masita Masuta taking up Onyango’s place in midfield and tasked with helping the team’s offensives.
