In 2010, it was Asamoah Gyan who missed from the spot against Uruguay as Ghana got edged out of the FIFA World Cup in South Africa. On Friday, it was the turn of Andre Ayew as the Black Stars saw their stay in Qatar put to a halt, again against same Uruguay but both sides crashed out.A 2-0 defeat in the hands of Uruguay saw Ghana finish last in the group with South Korea and joining Portugal in the knockouts after winning 2-1 in the other match of the group, Uruguay had to settle for third. The ghosts of 2010 in South Africa came back to haunt the Black Stars as Andre Ayew missed a glorious chance to put his side in front after just 20 minutes. Ghana were awarded a penalty after the referee consulted the VAR, finding Uruguay’s custodian Sergio Rochet culpable of bringing down Mohammed Kudus clumsily in the box.Ayew stepped up to take the resultant penalty and despite taking eternity from the time of the referee’s whistle to when he struck the ball, he hit a substandard kick that was palmed away by Rochet. Dejavu!🇬🇭💔— FIFA World Cup (@FIFAWorldCup) December 2, 2022 Giorgian De Arrascaeta found the opener five minutes later, heading home a ball that Ghana’s custodian had failed to deal with properly from Luiz Suarez’s initial shot.Nothing seemed to be working for the Otto Addo charges as Giorgian De Arrascaeta added another one six minutes later to make it 2-0, again being on the end of a Suarez ball to punish Ghana and wheel away in celebration. In both goals, Uruguay’s press saw Ghana give away the ball and they capitalized on the errors to score two goals and take a commanding lead heading into the break. They were however dealt a blow slightly past the half-hour mark when Rodrigo Bentancur had to come off injury with Matias Vecino taking up his place in midfield but they managed to protect the lead to halfway.De Arrascaeta’s double gives Uruguay a half-time lead! 👊#FIFAWorldCup | #Qatar2022— FIFA World Cup (@FIFAWorldCup) December 2, 2022 On resumption for the second half, the Ghanaian coach was the first to make changes as he rested the Ayew brothers for Kamaldeen Sulemana and Osman Bukari as they sought to shake up the team and look for goals. The gods of VAR were seemingly working in favor of Ghana, and a penalty claim by Uruguay for a foul on Darwin Nunez by Daniel Amartey was disregarded even after consulting the VAR 13 minutes into the second period.2.75 Serbia 3.20 Switzerland 2.857.75 Cameroon 4.40 Brazil 1.40Additional Reporting by AFP
