Super sub Odongo sinks AFC Leopards

Cavin Odongo came off the bench to score the all-important goal as Posta Rangers overcame AFC Leopards 1-0 in a colourless league match staged at the Nyayo National Stadium on Saturday afternoon.Heading into the game, both teams hsd registered draws in their last league assignments. Ingwe drew 1-1 with Sofapaka while Posta settled for a barren draw against Nairobi City Stars and both sides were keen on getting three points.Leopards coach Patrick Aussems believes his side should have been awarded a foul in the build up to the goal. “I think that we had an average first half, we lost too much ball. I made two substitutions at halftime, and in the second half, to be honest with you only one team was playing and it’s us because we were very good in the second half. We knew that they would play so many long balls. In the end they scored on the counter attack, which for me was a foul on Kaicy,” Aussems said. Posta’s John Kamau reveled in his first win of the season although he admitted that they did not play too well. “It’s a sweet victory because my players persevered. It was not an easy game, we played an able opponent but the good thing is that in the process of building we have our first three points of the season. We didn’t play too well but we can build on this win which is important for the players and the technical team, ” he said. The first real opportunity of the duel went AFC Leopards’ way in the 6th minute when striker, Ojo Olaniyi was put through on goal only for him to miskick the ball allowing Posta keeper John Njau to easily gather the ball. Post’s first attempt was a wild long-range attempt from Brian Marita in the 13th minute. The better part of the first half was characterised by misspases and wasted half chances and a cautious approach from both teams.Njau pulled a huge save in the 35th minute to deny Kayci Odhiambo from a set piece after the defender curled his effort over the wall. Moments later, miscommunication between Michael Owino and Bernard Ondiek saw Posta waste a glorious chance inside Ingwe’s penalty area.In a bid to bring life into his forward life, Leopards coach Patrick Aussems made two changes before the restart. Maxwell Otieno and Giovanni Lukhumwa were rested for Victor Omune and Cliff Nyakeya who made their first appearances of the season after being cleared to play on Friday. The pair combined three minutes after the restart, Nyakeya played Omune through but the forward’s cut-back was missed by an unmarked Olaniyi. After that early real chance, the second half took a dull turn that characterised the first stanza. Misplaced passes were in plenty for both teams.Omune had a great chance to break the deadlock in the 70th minute but his low shot from the edge of the area was parried for a corner kick by Njau.Second half Against the run of play, Posta took the lead in the 79th minute through substitute, Cavin Odongo, the attacker wrestled Kayci Odhiambo for the ball, raced towards goal before firing past Levis Opiyo. Ingwe’s protests that the defender had been fouled fell to deaf ears.##NAJAVA_MECA_6894773##Ingwe’s late pressure did not yield anything as Posta held on to claim their first win of the season.AFC Leopards Starting XI: Levis Opiyo, Peter Thiong’o, Washington Munene, Kayci Odhiambo, Lewis Bandi, Giovanni Lukhumwa, Brian Wanyama, Jaffari Owiti, Ojo Olaniyi, Maxwell Otieno, Eugene MukangulaSubs: Maxwell Muchesia, Boniface Mukhekhe, Robert Mudenyu, Owen Mboya, Erick Mbithi, Collins Shivachi, Zachariah Njite, Victor Omune, Josphat Lopaga, Cliff NyakeyaPosta Rangers starting XI: John Njau, Elvis Osok, Michael Apudo, Swaleh Pamba, Kennedy Owino, Dinken Mwema, Brian Marita, Bernard Ondiek, Michael Owino, Brian Otieno, Caleb OliloSubs: Brandon Obiero, Geoffrey Shiveka, Kennedy Ochieng, Calvin Odongo, Jackson Dwang, Patrick Otieno, Chrispinus Onyango, Francis Nambute, Sammy OderoNzoia whip City StarsElsewhere in Bungoma, Nzoia Sugar downed City Stars 1-0.
